Both me and Kanchan Bharti are so so thankful to everyone who joined us in our journey and contributed so valuably - Vipul Yadav, Ansh Arora, Husain Khandwa, Abhishek Kumar, Gollapalli Srijan, Anushi Gupta, Sugan Manohar - we definitely couldn't have done it without you. I wish I could've given back more to you guys. There's so much to say and a lot more people to acknowledge but I am sure this won't be the last of my cringy posts, so anyway. We are going full speed ahead - a lot has been cooking under the cover over the past few months and hopefully we'll be able to share more with you soon. TDV Partners portfolio company Dexif raises its seed round of $4M from RTP Global I had met Deepank Bhandari, Tushar Sharma & Pallavi Bajaj last year when they had just started building with the big vision of democratising fixed income instruments by making an exchange for bonds in India. They have currently built a marketplace where they help small and mid size companies raise debt from a variety of investors. I’ve been turning down all media requests for a post election analysis but talk of whether alliances will hold post elections reminded me of something I wrote 26 years ago - before a Lok Sabha Election result.   The basic premise: one who holds 30 seats may have the same power, or even more, as compared to someone who holds 245 seats.   A mathematical Power Index explains how   Quote Let’s get on with the “Power Indices” of the various political parties.   Think of it this way : suppose you require a 50% plus majority to form a government and there are 3 parties in the parliament with the following seat tally : 44%, 39% and 17%.   Now, any two of these can join together to form the government and therefore all three of them have exactly equal power, no matter that Party 3 has got less than half the number of seats that the first two have. This is a concept that is of use in any ‘majority wins’ decision rule from shareholder resolutions to jury decisions.   Suppose there are 4 parties in the fray this time around: A, B, C and D parties, having 35%, 34%, 17% and 14% of the seats resp. Again if a simple majority is needed to form a government, any two out of A, B & C can form a government whereas the Party D’s support is never really crucial to anyone.   If this party’s 14% is added onto the percentages of any of the first three parties, the sum does not exceed 50% and any larger coalition of parties doesn’t require its support anyway. Party D is therefore called a ‘dummy’ - an apt term for someone whose vote can never change a losing coalition into a winning one or vice versa.   The dummy has no power, while all the other three parties i.e. A, B and C have equal power.   This is inspite of the fact that Party C has far fewer seats than A and B and only a few more than the smallest one i.e. Party D   For those interested, there is a technical concept called the Banzhaf Power Index (BPI) of a group, party or person which is defined as the number of ways in which that group, party or person can change a losing coalition into a winning one or vice versa.   In the preceding example, the BPI of parties A, B and C are equal and that of Party D is zero.    In fact as an individual MP, you are better-off being a part of Party C than Party A or B because as part of the government you get a disproportionate share of the goodies. This is exactly what happened in U.P. where virtually every MLA of a marginal party who joined the BJP government was made a minister - something that was a remote dream for most BJP MLAs.   Unquote (First Global's weekly 'Markets, Majorities and Maths', January 1998)   Thus if a few smaller partners can hold whichever coalition government to ransom, it introduces uncertainty.   “The more things change, the more they stay the same” Hence, I can repeat a 1998 piece which has contemporary parallels   We may be in for some interesting times.   History also shows coalition governments have been pretty good for the economy and markets.

Lately, I have been getting more questions about election results than about the stocks in my portfolio. Elections for India, the world’s largest democracy, are underway, and there's palpable excitement across various investor communities and sectors. While some investors want to shy away from the markets, others want to go all in! But what happens to markets during elections? Like the budget, the interest rate policy, or a big earnings release, these can have big unpredictable moves and trends around the election dates. Expectations of changes in government policies, political stability, and speculation around elections' outcomes often drive fluctuations. Stock markets are always active, and although we can't know exactly how an election will turn out, we can use history as our guide. Looking at past election cycles, stock markets tend to go up in the 6 months before an election, with an average of 14% over the previous 9 cycles. This positive trend has been seen all across—in one month prior, around the results, and even six months or one year out. What is to be noted is that sometimes a change in government, like in 2004, can cause a knee-jerk reaction and then turn positive, or another time, like in 2014, it could bring on a rally. Even continuing the same policies is not guaranteed to appease the market. With unpredictability all around, a strategic approach to investing is crucial during election cycles. Investors can consider defensive investing by allocating a larger portion of their portfolio to large caps or sectors less sensitive to economic cycles, such as utilities or consumer staples. These sectors tend to perform reliably, regardless of the economic climate. Another strategy is to engage in tactical asset allocation, adjusting portfolios towards sectors that might benefit from the election outcomes based on the policies of the likely winners. For example, if a government with a strong focus on infrastructure development is expected, increasing allocations to the construction and materials sectors could be advantageous. Elections inherently bring uncertainty. Maintaining a diversified portfolio and thinking long-term are essential strategies. As per an article authored by Samidha Sharma India’s startup and technology ecosystem is witnessing the emergence of a growing pool of influential founders turning into funders by backing multiple domestic funds. In the latest instance, CaratLane - A Tanishq Partnership founder Mithun Sacheti and Flipkart cofounder Binny Bansal have become anchor LPs (limited partners) in Bengaluru-based Xeed Ventures, an early-stage fund run by Sailesh Tulshan, said multiple people in the know. The Rs 600 crore fund, formerly known as 021 Capital, has also roped in Premji Invest as an LP, the people added. Vikas Khemani, founder of Carnelian Asset Management and Advisors Pvt Ltd, is launching the Bharat Amritkal Fund, a Category III AIF requiring a minimum investment of ₹5 crore. The fund aims to capitalize on India's projected economic growth, targeting sectors like manufacturing, banking, infrastructure, and consumption. Khemani envisions India's GDP reaching $29-30 trillion by 2047, driven by significant shifts such as exponential growth and indigenous innovation. The fund focuses on long-term investments in companies poised for substantial growth.  Currently, India’s GDP stands slightly under $4 trillion. By 2047, at the conclusion of the amrit kal, Khemani projects it to reach between $29 trillion and $30 trillion. This growth is anticipated to increase per capita income from $2,500 to $18,000, positioning India to account for 15-16% of global GDP. Why is there such a substantial interest in REITs & Invits, new age investment products brought in by SEBI ? One can get a sense from GSec, which fell below the 7% mark. REITs and Invits offer stable dividend income coupled with potential of capital appreciation. Low volatility and payouts ranging from ~6-11%, make them attractive for yield hungry institutional investors, as they seek alpha above the risk free rate (GSec). My investment strategy largely stemmed from what I saw growing up. Like any indian middle class family, investments weren’t discussed at my home. Except for the yearly PPF ritual, occasional nod to FDs, and frequent discussions around buying our own house. In my early years of earning, I followed suit and only considered the investment options my parents and peers trusted. This behaviour was common among those around me. So, this reinforced my reluctance to explore anything new. Eventually, I started meeting people who invested actively and made much better returns. I realised that I was missing out on so much. 𝐈 𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐦𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬. These are the steps I took to make the change: 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭. You have to decide that you need to invest better and create wealth for yourself. No one else can. Setting a goal for when I can be Financially Independent really helped me. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡. Read or watch videos to get started. A lot of content is available out there. A great start is mutual funds SIPs - there’s nothing else that’s as simple to understand and yet has high returns potential. 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐢𝐧. You don’t need to do it all. Just do 1 or 2 things well. I decided to focus on MFs. I’d recommend reading - 108 Questions & Answers on Mutual Funds & SIP. This really helped me get better at MF investing. 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞. Look amongst your peers for those investing well. Have conversations with them to learn their views and validate your strategies. 𝐁𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠. I’ve learnt the hard way that the best investment strategy is actually the simplest - be consistent with your investments and invest for the long term. I realise the cultural silence around investing is very real, difficult to break, and especially daunting at first. Did you also face a similar experience?
