We ran a survey in our office a week back and not surprisingly only 15% people prioritised their liver / gut health. No wonder India is likely to have double distinction of being the diabetes as well as the fatty liver capital of the world. Situation indeed is alarming and calls for an urgent action. Today on Global Fatty Liver Day, GLI (Global Liver Institute) has announced the theme as “Keep your liver healthy and disease-free". Global Fatty Liver Day, formerly known as International NASH Day, is a public education campaign that was inaugurated in June 2018 to enhance awareness and emphasize the pressing nature of fatty liver disease, particularly its advanced stages, which impacts a staggering 115 million individuals worldwide. An estimated 357 million people will be affected by 2030. Because symptoms of fatty liver disease are often not overt, it is often underdiagnosed and underreported. Fatty liver disease is considered a major risk factor for concurrent conditions: more than 70% of patients are living with obesity, up to 75% have type 2 diabetes, and anywhere from 20-80% have hyperlipidemia. Unchecked, fatty liver disease may lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver transplant. A lot is being said about the dearth of women KMPs across industries . Though the no. is higher in the Pharma industry , most of them are from the promoter families. While there is a significant no. of women at entry and middle levels the numbers go down significantly as we reach the top. Women bring to the table a diverse perspective : empathy, adaptability, the ability to deal with ambiguity and a lot of grit . So how can we have more women at the top. To all my women counterparts: 1.Shouldering equal responsibilities is the key - Its imperative to embrace challenging responsibilities- whether it is on the shop floor or in the field. 2.Be ready to rough it out... If there is a deadline or an emergency - be prepared to sit it out with your colleagues. Exceptions are meant to be situation or need based - not gender based . 3.Hang in there : At certain stages of your journey- you will find naysayers , telling you how - ' you can't do it' , till the noise is as loud as a cricket stadium... Let your conviction drown it out and hang in there. 4.Commitment: Women in the workforce are at a critical juncture now. Every step we take determines our own future and that of other women. Give every opportunity you get a best shot and stick to it in spite of difficulties . Accept your privileges with grace but use them only when it's essential . 5.Reach out for help: For other responsibilities don't be hesitant to ask for help from family members, housekeepers and domestic staff. For those based out of  India  we are blessed with a wonderful support system . In the last 20+ years that I have been in the profession I have seen quite a positive change with lot of women entering the Pharma B2B and Active Ingredient Sales teams, creating markets, building businesses and staying there. The time is now ripe for us to chart new growth stories for ourselves and create the next generation of talent- to ensure an increase in KMPs in our industry in the next couple of years.
