Navigating Workplace Harassment: Awareness and Carefulness for Female Employees Sexual harassment in the workplace is a troubling issue that affects countless women around the world, including in Indian corporates. While legal frameworks like the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act) exist to protect employees, it is crucial for female employees to be aware of their rights and to take proactive steps to protect themselves. This blog aims to raise awareness and provide guidance on how female employees can navigate and safeguard themselves in the workplace. Real-Life Scenario: A Case Study Meet Asha, a senior software developer at a leading IT firm in Pune. Asha had worked at the company for four years and was known for her dedication and professionalism. However, her situation changed drastically when the company owner, Mr. Kapoor, began making inappropriate comments and advances. The harassment escalated to physical molestation, with Mr. Kapoor touching Asha inappropriately. Asha felt trapped, fearing retaliation and doubting whether her complaint would be taken seriously without hard evidence. Awareness: Know Your Rights You can familiarize yourself with the POSH Act: The POSH Act requires that you form an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) in companies with more than 10 employees. This committee is responsible for addressing complaints of sexual harassment. Understand the provisions of the POSH Act, your rights under the law, and the procedures for reporting harassment. Know the Reporting Channels: Identify the designated points of contact for reporting harassment within your organization. This could be a member of the ICC, the HR department, or an external helpline. Carefulness: Proactive Steps for Safety Seek Support from Colleagues: Confide in trusted colleagues or friends within the workplace. Having a support system can provide emotional strength and corroborate your experiences if needed. Set Boundaries: Be clear and assertive in setting personal boundaries. If someone’s behaviour makes you uncomfortable, communicate your discomfort directly and firmly. Avoid Isolated Situations: As much as possible, avoid being alone with individuals who make you uncomfortable, especially in isolated settings like after-hours meetings or social gatherings outside of work. Educate Yourself and Others: Participate in training sessions on workplace harassment and encourage your peers to do the same. Knowledge empowers you to recognize and respond to inappropriate behaviour effectively. Together, we can build workplaces where respect and safety are paramount. You probably know it’s Labour Day today (1st May) Today is an occasion to make a very interesting choice. Should we do more work on this day to celebrate our profession? Or, Should we enjoy a holiday on this day and take some much-deserved rest? As per Wikipedia - “Labour Day is celebrated around the world to raise awareness of the rights of working people and to protect them from exploitation. It also serves as a reminder of the important role played by the working class in our society.” If you keep this context in mind, then really you could do any of the two – You could choose to work or decide to take a holiday (of course, subject to your organisation’s guidelines). But, whatever you choose to do, my request to you on this Labour Day is this – Let’s make a pledge to -         Work in harmony -         Value our colleagues -         Respect all professions -         Encourage diversity of ideas -         Keep the collective good in mind That, IMHO, will be the right thing to do today. India was the first country in the world to make Corporate Social Responsibility (#CSR) mandatory for certain class of companies. While there are many shining examples of CSR, there are also several instances of misappropriation of funds meant for philanthropic purposes. Effective measures to curb the menace: Robust corporate governance: A well-balanced internal management will help in mitigating the fraud risks involved in CSR activities. Dedicated management team: A dedicated full-fledged team for monitoring CSR activities in addition to the CSR Committee of the board. Shareholder activism: Shareholder activism will escalate the organisation’s accountability towards the CSR funds. I received a copy of the "dus spoke India Inc" report released by Give Grants and the Bridgespan Group earlier today. The report is a beautiful synopsis of how CSR has evolved in the last decade and, more importantly, it articulates a vision for the next ten years. The findings published in the report are truly exciting - India Inc has unlocked capital worth Rs 217K crores for CSR deployment in the last 10 years and we are expecting that this number will grow to almost Rs1 lakh crores per annum in the next 10 years. There is an increased focus on innovation, partnerships and using CSR funds to drive innovations and improve the effectiveness of state funding. CSR is now an integral part of strategy and a top of mind agenda for the Board. I have attached the report for those of you who want to have a look at it. The overall story is very heartening and is the direct outcome of a well framed law. At ZEE we have embedded many of these insights into our CSR strategy - using CSR funds to drive social innovations through our backyard goatery and poultry program in UP #AshaKiran; catalysing social innovation through our engagement with #SNEHA to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes in Maharashtra; working closely with #MagicBus to skill young women in all metros and some state capitals to create employability and many more! There are still some challenges that we need to address and to my mind solving the talent challenge is the next big one. How do we make working in the social sector a first choice for our best talent? Suspense surrounds the two prominent Lok Sabha seats of Amethi and Rae Bareli as the decision on Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi's candidature has been delayed.
