Where are the women 🚺 ? You might ask this question when you look at safety signage (e.g., fire exits, road signs, emergency assembly points) in offices, corporate parks, cinema halls, and public spaces. Women are rarely featured, except on restroom signage. The Craft Community couldn’t ignore this gender inequality in design and decided to initiate a change. (Craft is a community platform supported by Tonic Worldwide that aims to recognize the relevance of craft, celebrate creative work, and help budding talent with the resources to succeed.) Recently, The Craft Community held its first Designathon as part of the ‘Studio’ initiative, which saw participation from over 20 design students mentored by six industry experts. Together, they created a new library of gender-neutral signage and even placed these new designs in the vicinity. Good design becomes great when it is actionable. The Craft Community invites everyone to help change the signs in offices, building complexes, private access roads, and other places. Or simply help spread the word.
