Gloucestershire's Fire Service College in Moreton-in-Marsh has introduced photorealistic software and haptic vests that generate heat as part of a new training programme. This innovative approach is designed to save time and money while reducing the number of repetitions performed in real smoke. Alex Harvey, co-founder and CEO of RiVR, explained that this technology has been in development for four years. "It transforms you from where you are into somewhere different," Speight noted, adding that the new approach helps firefighters become proficient without the risks associated with real fire situations. This cutting-edge training method represents a significant advancement in firefighter education, offering a safer, more efficient way to prepare new recruits for the challenges they will face on the job. #VR #virtualreality #technology #thesocialtalk

US economic growth accelerated in the spring, expanding at an annual rate of 2.8% in the three months to June, driven by strong consumer spending. This growth, though faster than expected, was slower than in 2023. The economy's performance is a key issue in the ongoing presidential campaign, with voters concerned about inflation and high borrowing costs. Despite the low unemployment rate of 4.1%, economic discontent remains high due to a 20% rise in prices since 2021. President Biden's withdrawal from the race has added complexity, with analysts predicting a tight election outcome influenced by economic conditions and potential interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. #USEconomicGrowth #thesocialtalks #InflationConcerns #Election2024

320,000 British adults find themselves in the throes of poverty due to unrecognizably high mortgage costs after the sharp increase in interest rates. The "poverty" in question refers to relative poverty, with people living in households with income below 60% of the median. Those who needed new home loans or renewed existing loans in the past 2 years experienced a sharp fall in their disposable income. Pensioners and lower-income households faced a higher inflation rate than average due to rising energy and food prices, as they spend more of their budgets on these items. These poverty figures do not exhibit this. The crashing economy begs the question: what lies ahead for the working family? #Poverty #TheSocialTalks #UKEconomy #News #UKNews

For nearly four months, the spread of bird flu in the nation’s dairy cattle has stoked fears that, if left unchecked, the virus could eventually unleash a pandemic. The recent cluster of human cases connected to poultry farms in Colorado only underscores that the threat remains real. Genetic sequencing of the virus collected from the sickened poultry workers closely resembles what’s circulating in dairy herds, suggesting that cattle somehow introduced the virus into the poultry flock. At one massive poultry facility, workers culled the birds under particularly dangerous circumstances. Scientists are still trying to get a better sense of what exactly these changes in the dairy cattle version of H5N1 are doing, but are certain that some mutations are already enhancing its ability to replicate in mammalian cells. #BirdFlu #USA #SpreadOfBirdFlu #IsItBack #TheSocialTalks
