#GeMsMassiveSuccess (with 205% surge in procurement of services and GMV standing at ₹ 8.88 lakh crore, India’s GeM surpasses renowned platforms in South Korea, Singapore) ———> Industry updates! #GovernmentOnlineMarketplace GeM, India's online marketplace for public procurement, launched in 2016, facilitates transparent and efficient procurement for government departments, organisations and PSUs. The portal has surpassed a few renowned public procurement platforms like South Korea's #KONEPS and Singapore's #GeBIZ. As per the latest announcement from the Govt, GeM has over 1.5 lakh government buyers and 21 lakh sellers and service providers. It has integrated 89,421 panchayats and over 760 co-operatives within its procurement ecosystem. The portal provides a wide variety of products ranging from eggs and office stationery to vehicles and defence equipment. Some stunners from GeM : 1. Massive cost savings : GeM has enabled the Govt to save over Rs 45,000 crore since 2016 2. GeM procurement doubled to ₹4-lakh crore Vs previous year. Nearly 50% of the total GMV valued at ₹4-lakh crore can be attributed to procurement of services (in March 2024) 3. Assembly of #BrahMos missile is being done through GeM as a service contract. One could see a vast variety of services, including transportation, hiring of helicopter services, logistics, waste management and webcasting on the portal. Mr PK Singh, CEO of GeM said “GeM’s success has caught the attention of some countries in Africa, South East Asia and India’s neighbourhood and the MEA’s inputs may be sought to take the matter forward. We can either provide consultancy services and show them our model or we can set up a similar platform for them. We are very encouraged by the enthusiasm and interest shown”. Mr Singh added - “Currently, only goods and services are allowed on the platform and we want to include works contract also. Right to Privacy is not absolute, says Delhi High Court while hearing pleas by Meta and WhatsApp against the govt of India's new law which puts social media platforms subject to Indian court orders to identify originators of the messages. Meta threatens to pull Whatsapp out of #India quoting encryption on the platform. The Indian govt however maintains that tracing message originators is crucial for tackling harmful content and maintaning online safety. The court has postponed the further hearing on this matter to August 2024. Octane view: We are yet to review the detailed court proceedings but clearly platforms can not say no to local court jurisdiction and also need to have equal standards and parity of transparency, accountability and responsibility as it pertains to operating in their parent country. #DigitalIndia #Privacy #OnlineSafety #CyberSecurity #Fakenews

Is the #DataPrivacy bill perfect? No. But it is a huge first step towards creating a data privacy regime protecting the fundamental right of citizens of Bharat towards their privacy. Yes the IT act with its subsequent modifications did cover the basics but largely proved to be ineffective. Digital Personal Data Protection Bill proposes to introduce penalties of up to Rs 250 cr on entities misusing or failing to protect digital data, among other provisions. #dpdpbill is an important step towards this. Lok Sabha has passed this bill. Now 2 steps away from becoming a law in India. Data privacy has to keep up with rapid changes in digital technologies and hence we anticipate timely modifications to this law.
