Excuse us for making this post today, but it was a challenging day yesterday to say farewell to Iain McDonald who has served the Island as Information Commissioner with independence, integrity, honesty, knowledge and always with the public at the centre. The majority of the work in supporting individuals, private and public sector goes unseen. The longevity of service of the remaining team, who have all worked together for 18+ years (except our only other recruit in that time, Emma Evans Int.Dip(AML), FICA, PC.dp. 3 years) is testament to Iain. We all wish Iain a long and happy retirement. Monday is the start of a new era for the Office, welcoming a new Commissioner, Stewart Haynes, to fill the large shoes left behind and continue fulfilling the statutory functions of independent regulator and arbitratror, upholding the rights of the public.

It has been our pleasure to work with Iain and share common experiences as, as Island regulators, we strive for the highest standards of personal information protection for our Island communities, particularly as members of ‘BIIDPA,’ the British Irish and Islands Data Protection Authorities forum that links authorities that have close affinities. Today is the last day in post for the Commissioner at the Isle of Man Information Commissioner’s office, Iain McDonald. I have had the very great pleasure of knowing and working with Iain and his team for more years than I care to say. On behalf of myself and the Office of the Data Protection Authority, I want to wish Iain every happiness in the next chapter of his life. I also want to wish his team the very best in what are clearly challenging circumstances. There are some people drawn to their roles by power/money/glory. There are others who are drawn by a strong sense of purpose and a desire to contribute in whatever way possible to a world where human beings are valued, not exploited. Thank you Iain, Nicola W., and your team for being in the latter camp.
