I was recently interviewed about the dangers of Chinese smart cars. This topic reminds me of a talk I gave in 2014 at RSA San Francisco, alongside the superstar Hila Meller, and at TEDx in Greece (thanks to the amazing Keren Elazari). Both talks were titled "State-Sponsored Spies Inside Facebook." In these talks, I discussed the growing cooperation between commercial entities and their governments. I concluded with this question: Will we teach our children not to download certain apps just because they were developed in an enemy country? Just a few years later, this scenario has become a reality. For example, the U.S. government prohibits its personnel from installing the Chinese TikTok app, citing concerns that it is used by the Chinese government to track people globally. It's easy to vilify China as the "evil giant," but let's not forget that the U.S. has engaged in similar activities. Edward Snowden revealed that the NSA used data from companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Apple to promote American security and economic interests. And the U.S. is just one example in a long list of countries engaging in such practices. To summarize my RSA and TEDx lectures in one sentence: Nations have both homeland and financial incentives to embed spies in commercial companies like Facebook, Google, and Apple. Years after my lecture, it was discovered that Saudi Arabia had hired three spies inside Twitter to gather information on regime opponents. The Saudi authorities boasted of a new secret weapon against dissenters, claiming that the anonymity of the internet no longer protected them. Surprisingly enough, Saudi Arabia has started building their relationship with the Twitter spies, just 5 months after my talk. I hope my lecture wasn't the inspiration for their actions, though the RSA conference is attended by 30,000 people, and my talk had only about 30 attendees (0.1%). So, the chances are slim. Now, this scenario is repeating itself with smart cars. These vehicles are equipped with countless sensors, including microphones and GPS, transforming what was once a private space into an advanced surveillance system. This poses significant security risks, especially for military and security personnel who might have confidential conversations in their cars. And this is before we even consider the cyber threats, such as car hacking and kidnappings. However, it's essential to remember that the smart car war is primarily an economic one. The American automobile industry accounts for over 3% of the U.S. GDP. The Chinese see the smart electric vehicle revolution as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape the industry and aim to be the leading player. They have numerous advantages, such as natural resources, mass production experience, and cheap labor. Moreover, the Chinese government is making it a national goal to dominate this sector, even subsidizing car production to artificially lower prices. The car war is on.

"AR computing!" Say goodbye to traditional laptops. An Israeli entrepreneur has innovated a technology that bids farewell to our traditional laptops. Tamir Berliner- founder of Sightful and the innovator behind the Spacetop G1! What is the Spacetop G1? Spatial computer that seamlessly integrates the functionality of a laptop with the capabilities Of Augmented Reality (AR). A 100-inch virtual workspace replaces the need for a physical screen. Spacetop G1 adapts to various environments, whether at home, in the office, or on the go. This represents a step forward in integrating AR technologies with daily tasks. Spatial with AR transforms how we interact with digital content, personally and professionally. The real test will be in its execution. The usability of the AR interface, the battery life, the comfort of AR glasses, etc., are crucial. I believe Sightful has managed to address these practical concerns effectively. And I am awaiting the official release in india. Congrats to Tamir Berliner and the team for their bold move and fantastic innovation. The Spacetop G1 is an evolution in how we think about personal computing. Google's BIGGEST acquisition: Israeli cybersecurity company Wiz. Despite recent doubts, Israel's tech scene is thriving. VCs and big tech see this too. Remember when Intel announced its $25 BILLION chip factory in Israel in late December 2023? It's clear—Israel is still a hotbed for innovation and talent. Here are the stunning reported facts: - Wiz boasts about $500 million in ARR, making this deal’s multiples mind-blowing. - It reached $100m in revenues ONLY 18 months after launch. - Just two months ago, they raised $1 billion at a $12 billion valuation. This deal is a massive win for the global tech ecosystem. It injects much-needed liquidity (a great point made by Harry Stebbings) and boosts Israel's tech landscape during a difficult time for the country. The skeptics can step aside. Israel remains one of the best places in the world to build, invest in and acquire tech companies. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ UPDATE JULY 23, 2024: Reports that Wiz has turned down the acquisition offer! Last month, I shared my top three verticals for the automotive industry in 2024, with cybersecurity leading the list. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆: In my experience working with numerous SaaS companies in the automotive sector, only one demonstrated a strong commitment to security. This company was an Israeli startup aiming to enter the US automotive market. They already had clients in healthcare and banking, industries known for their stringent security requirements. Through them, I learned about essential security measures such as SOC II compliance, SSL, 2FA, HTTPS protocols, documented security procedures and much more. They prioritized user access security, even for demo accounts. In contrast, many US vendors showed little concern for these critical security aspects. For example, I could easily obtain and use dealer login credentials across different software without any restrictions. The numerous subtle yet significant differences in their security approach highlighted the importance of robust cybersecurity practices, which many in the US automotive industry seem to overlook. Today there is more connectivity, more compliance and regulation and consumers are demanding more. Combined make more an attractive market.

Alphabet in talks over $23B deal: Alphabet is exploring a plan to buy Israeli cybersecurity startup Wiz for $23 billion, in what would be the company’s largest acquisition, reported Reuters. Wiz, established in Tel Aviv and now based in New York, provides cybersecurity products including AI-powered threat detection and responses to some of the biggest corporations including Microsoft, Amazon, Morgan Stanley and Shell. Reuters reported Alphabet would mostly pay cash and a deal “could come together soon”, according to a source. Wiz has raised $2 billion in funding and is valued at around $12 billion. Earlier this year, the startup acquired cloud detection and response specialist Gem Security for $350 million. Alphabet has stepped up its cybersecurity portfolio in recent years, spending $5.4 billion to acquire specialist Mandiant in 2022. Great accomplishment to our cyber ecosystem, Eleven Israeli startups are featured in the Rising in Cyber list, which highlights the most promising cyber companies in the U.S. https://risingincyber.com/ The project was organized by the global venture capital fund Notable Capital, in cooperation with the NewYork Stock Exchange, Fenwick, and HSBC Innovation Banking. The list includes: Gomboc.ai , Oligo Security , and Wing Security among the 10 early-stage companies; Astrix Security, Descope , and Grip Security at the mid-stage; and Cyera , Drata , Island , Orca Security , and Wiz at the growth stage. The Rising in Cyber survey of more than 100 security leaders revealed three innovation drivers needed by security teams to adapt to a growing footprint of technologies, the rise of AI, and the evolving sophistication of cyber criminals. These themes provide a glimpse into the future buying patterns of CISOs. 1. Identity and Access Management The rise of non-human actors and identity-centric, malware-free attacks, which accounted for 75% of incidents in 2023, highlights the urgent need for robust identity and access management (IAM) solutions. Startups are stepping up with next-generation Identity Governance and Administration (IGA), new authentication platforms, and privileged access management tools. 2. Cloud Security With the transition to multi-cloud architectures, traditional security tools remain inadequate for cloud environments. Innovations in cloud detection and response, data security, automation, risk management, and AI threat detection are becoming essential. 3. Application and Code Security The widespread use of open-source code introduces new vulnerabilities, while AI supercharges product security teams. Startups enabling collaboration between developers and security teams are leading the way, with AI improving code remediation and testing.

The Israeli high-tech sector is strong and will emerge even stronger after the crisis. Institutional investors in Israel must, however, invest more to help the industry. Over the past decade, the high-tech market has proven to be highly profitable, evidenced by numerous mergers and acquisitions. High-tech must be a significant component of investment portfolios. Our role is to revitalize the market. Without the support of institutional investors, it will be challenging to attract foreign investors. Yesterday, I was privileged to speak on the Alternative Investments panel moderated by Roee Bergman from Calcalist כלכליסט at the Future Investments 2024 conference by Calcalist and Migdal Group. I want to extend my gratitude to my fellow panelists: Keren Kalifa, CEO of G City Israel; Amir Hessel, Founding Partner of Arbel Fund; Dr. Navot Bar, CEO of Keystone Reit; and Mor Assia, Co-Founder and Partner at iAngels, for an inspiring discussion. #HighTech #Investment #Israel #InstitutionalInvestors #Innovation

Google’s record-breaking $23 billion acquisition of Wiz is a game changer for Israeli tech. This is not just a landmark deal for Israel, but a powerful statement by Google in supporting the Israeli tech ecosystem. This is huge news during regular times… not to mention during a time of war where many VCs and corporates are shying away from investing in Israel. It is the largest acquisition in Israeli history, and Google’s largest acquisition ever. Yes... EVER! Wiz was swinging for the fences from day one. The team scaled the business to $100 million in ARR within 18 months, becoming the fastest-growing software company ever. And yet… selling it for $23 billion at this point in time? This is a game changer. I believe this acquisition signals a turning point for Israeli tech, and that this deal will undoubtedly have a ripple effect, encouraging more investment in Israeli startups. In a way, it reminds me of the acquisition of Waze by Google (do you see a pattern here?🙂) Outside of this being great news for Israeli #founders, it’s some good news for the people of #Israel, who after close to 10 months of war, get validation that the world appreciates Israeli innovation, and provides a sense of hope… We’re going to see tremendous momentum in the Israeli tech ecosystem going into the fall. It’s an exciting time to be an Israeli founder. 97212 Ventures #startupnation #venturecapital #israelinnovation

The concern over Israel's potential international isolation was a prominent topic at the defense technology (defense-tech) session held yesterday at the Technovation Conference by TheMarker and the Technion. Einat Weidberg, a partner at Shibolet, who participated in the panel, shared: "In the past few weeks, senior law firms in France have approached us to identify defense companies which may be interested to be represented in French courts and fight the decision to block Israeli access to the weapons conference in Paris”. Despite the fear of isolation, we are seeing today a tremendous increase in demand for security products, including from Israel. Einat mentioned that the previous major hype in the defense tech sector was the homeland security trend following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. "The challenge of stratups in the defense field is to raise funds through their early stage and reach the growth stage, where they will become candidates for investments by large international VCs and private equity funds. If the Israeli echosystem will not be ready to invest in the defense tech start ups in their early stages, it will be very difficult for such companies to reach the growth stages, and their chances will decrease”.
