Wrapping up a very busy Q2 for Iron Nation, and seems overall in #StartupNation! Although the data is preliminary, indications are to a slight rise in investment and M&A volumes across all tech sectors and funding rounds. Having said that, the pain continues for non-cyber and early-stage startups, especially for A rounds ( 🙏 comment below if you agree/disagree...) I found a couple of bright spots to share: 👏 GenAI - A lot has been said about Israel coming late to AI infrastructure, but still good to see that in quick moving segments like GenAI we rank 3rd. 👏 Ecosystem - According to Startup Genome Tel Aviv's startup ecosystem moved up to 4th place in the world, and StartupBlink ranked Israel 1st with 11 R&D branches of multinationals (Microsoft, Nvidia, IBM, SAP, Oracle, Intel...) https://lnkd.in/dW_YGkws

#StartupNationCentral - a non-profit promoting #Israelitechnology - has launched a great marketmap of Israeli defense companies and startups. The map features over 160 companies, as well as thematic accelerators and investors. You can share it with your friends or save it for yourself. How to use the map: 1. Companies are grouped by themes, and in this case, marked by their focus (pure defense or civilian use as well). 2. Identify the groups that resonate with you, select a logo, and start your research. 3. If a company interests you, follow them and relevant employees on LinkedIn and try to establish contact.

In recent years, there has been a significant decrease in the number of women serving as CEOs or chairpersons of public companies in Israel. While women constituted 8.1% of CEOs in the Israeli market in 2018, this figure dropped to just 3.5% in 2023. We all understand the importance of #diversity and gender #equality in the industry, but how can we actively contribute to it? One of the key organizations in this field is ProWoman Organization, which works to promote and encourage women in the workforce to develop meaningful careers in leadership and influential roles, collaborating with major global corporations, including #INVIDIA. As a result of the war, the Israeli defense industry and defense-tech companies have been at the forefront. A recent article I wrote for Calcalist כלכליסט explains how we can leverage the significant investments made in defense industries and their outstanding achievements for environmental sustainability and overcoming climate change. Dual-use technology refers to technologies that can be used for both military and civilian purposes, thereby maximizing the advantages of advanced technologies. A drone is a great example of dual-use technology – on one hand, it can be used for military surveillance, and on the other hand, it can also be used to monitor climate-related changes such as methane and other GHG emissions monitoring, weather patterns, etc. In the article, I provided more examples of dual-use technologies, including satellite technologies and green transportation. Defense industries and Israeli defense-tech companies can play a central role in dual-use technology. Investing in dedicated bodies like Capital Nature can provide the necessary network and market access for these technologies. This can revolutionize both sectors and drive progress towards a safer and more sustainable future. #DualUseTechnology #Defensetech #ClimateCrisis

The final selection day for the Genesis program took place at our partners' venue, Google for Startups Israel. Our selection committee was diverse and included investors, entrepreneurs, partners from KPMG and Gornitzky GNY, and business leaders. This was to provide suitable evaluation for the 40 startups that participated in the selection days for the program (a total of 140 startups applied), from which we will select 10 outstanding startups. It's exciting to see so many great startups, most of which have emerged in recent months. From the hardship and pain we are experiencing as a nation, new initiatives are sprouting that will change the world. Sitting quietly on the sidelines as the foundations of the civil world are shaken by Islamism (take 2, after WW2... Private investors, angels, and angel clubs have invested approximately $5 billion in Israeli tech companies in 2015-2023. Following the hype of prolific investments, private investors also accelerated their capital infuse in 2020-2022. According to IVC Data and Insights, the downtrend started in 2023 with an increase of 36%. The total investments by private investors dropped to $321 million in 612 deals, compared to $898 million in 1387 deals in 2022. The slump continues to 2024, and by mid-July, the total was just $42 million in 242 deals. Today, I came across a concerning trend that made me reflect on the state of our tech ecosystem. Despite the hype and excitement surrounding Israeli startups in recent years, the number of new technological entrepreneurship ventures has been on a steady decline. This downward trajectory persisted even during the explosive growth of 2020 and 2021. It's disheartening to witness the decrease in new early-stage tech companies sprouting into our ecosystem. The challenges we face seem to go beyond temporary economic crises or societal issues. The root causes may lie in how our government and investor communities are approaching sector strategies and regulations. As a part of the Israeli startup nation, it's crucial for us to address these underlying issues to ensure the continued growth and success of our tech industry. Keeping this trend going is not an option for our ecosystem, and it is maybe one of the most important challenges we need to think about in the near future.
