Our Senior Product Designer Rosie Dent-Spargo held a superb session in February with the Product Design team to create values and principles. Using guidance from Dan Makoski's book Uplifting Design, the session was dynamic and layered. The focus wasn't solely on creation, but also how we might embed principles and values into daily work. Well said. You do not have to draw well to visualize ideas that are complex or abstract. It does not matter if the drawings are at a 3rd grade level or a masters level. Our brains are flexible enough to recognize shapes even if it’s just a very low fidelity sketch. Here is some research to prove it: https://lnkd.in/geC2MCfv I draw almost everyday at work to visually communicate with others. I don’t use physical whiteboards anymore because I work remote. I have a simple drawing tablet: https://a.co/d/4tsk6Vc This allows me to use the ‘Annotate’ feature in Zoom. I clarify abstract or complex ideas on the spot in meetings. This has been a game changer. Or, if I’m in a generative mode, I use the drawing features in FigJam or Zoom Whiteboards, collaboratively with others. We mostly use language and listening to communicate. But as we communicate ideas that are abstract and complex, sometimes language can confuse people. Sometimes all that is needed is a quick, shitty sketch.

Over the last year, the Product Designers at Pion have been encapsulating what it is to be multi-faceted, creative problem solvers. We've focussed on improving our Design System within Figma making it easier and more enjoyable to use for ourselves and our colleagues. We approached the problem of how to make it more efficient by using design thinking and research techniques. The original efficiency tests we ran in March last year found that among the Product Managers collectively almost one full quarter was spent lost in our system, 60% of the time coming away frustrated and without what they were looking for. This March we ran exactly the same moderated tests and I'm pleased to say that the designers, alongside their day-to-day work, have improved Design System efficiency by 50%, giving our colleagues and the business 6 weeks back on average per year. Good design should be the facilitation of users needs. Users tend to need lots of the same things from a usability, accessibility, features perspective. This means a lot of design tends to be homogenous. These days it's less about trends and more about easy to use sites/app/products. There certainly are trends in visual design but the mechanisms to make those trends work are all common. Design trends will always exist, just like pop music will always exist. It's what's popular and with reason, even if it's not something we tend to want as artists.

The Design industry has bad UX 😬 Some observations: • Many are rewarded for working harder rather than smarter often leading to burnout • The mindset of here are a set of holes, find the one your peg fits into rather than shaping your own is too common • The assumption that progression is linear / upwards need to be broken • There’s a lack of GOOD ‘formal’ training across the FULL lifecycle of a career • Hiring processes are often hell-ish • Too many unfair or unrealistic expectations of both candidates and companies What are you seeing?? #Design #ThingsAreABitBroken
