This year, Odgers Berndtson Ireland is delving into under-researched areas of the economic landscape. The Human Resources community offers a unique, horizontal perspective on the People function and are essential in providing vital intelligence about an organisation's most valuable asset 👩‍💼 👨‍💼 Our survey of Heads of HR and Chief People Officers reveals a significant emphasis on Learning and Development, with over 90% of respondents prioritising the growth of existing staff over new hires. This aligns with the increased demand and focus on our Leadership Development programs, Executive Coaching, and Succession Planning for client organisations. Interestingly, in tandem with this statistic, only 60% of HR leaders feel equipped as leaders THEMSELVES to steer their organisation through 2024. This is interesting predominately because those focusing on developing others may have less confidence in their own levels of development - something I have not seen in quite a while. People often describe me as “an expert” or “experienced” in the Irish Payroll industry. I hear things like: -         You have seen it all by now. -         You have technical as well as practical knowledge. -         You have huge practice in what you do, etc. Usually, my response is this: I’ve gained my expertise because I have either made every possible mistake myself or witnessed others do so. The key point to understand is that it is never about the mistakes – it is about how we rectify them and move forward to ensure they don't happen again in the future. In my work, I frequently encounter mistakes made by others. This is precisely why I am hired: to review processes, suggest improvements, put safeguards in place, future-proof, and to support my clients’ Payroll function with industry-leading practices which ensure robust compliance. Each time I encounter an error, I feel a sense of dismay because of the inevitable next step: addressing the error, which involves identifying the person responsible. Exposing errors is challenging and stressful for me because I believe that nobody makes mistakes deliberately. We all strive to do our best. In a lot of cases, our mistakes (not only in work) are related to personal stress or challenges. Feeling like it's still difficult to recruit or no-one *is* recruiting? Well, it's not your imagination. This report highlights: Recruitment activity: - Weaker than last year, with strongest activity in Northern Territory (70%) and Queensland (56%) and weakest in New South Wales and South Australia (45%). Recruitment difficulty: - Highest in Northern Territory (59%) and Queensland (56%), with a significant decrease compared to last year in most other regions. Employers in regional areas have more difficulty recruiting compared to those in capital cities. Industry: - All industries experienced a decline in recruitment rates compared to last year, with Accommodation and Food Services having the highest rate (64%) and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services having the lowest (41%). Occupation: - Employers hiring Technicians and Trade Workers reported the most difficulty (71%) and the second longest vacancy filling time (67%).
