A 55-year-old Cork woman was banned from owning animals for life at Bandon District Court last Friday, 19th July 2024. ISPCA Animal Welfare Inspector Caroline Faherty told the court how, from September 2022, she was investigating reports regarding several dogs and puppies kept at two separate properties, one in Belgooly and another one in Kinsale, Co. Cork, but had been unable to make contact with the occupant of either property. When further information linking the two addresses came to light, search warrants were obtained for both properties and executed on 22nd December 2022 by ISPCA Inspectors assisted by dog wardens and members of An Garda Siochana. Sixteen dogs were discovered being kept in horrendous conditions; including eight dogs crammed into one crate. The dogs did not have access to food or water, and there was urine and faeces all over the floors and in the crates. All the dogs were seized and taken into ISPCA care. Veterinary examinations conducted after their seizure identified multiple health issues including malnourishment, badly matted coats, overgrown nails, ear and ear infections, alopecia, urine scalding, and cherry eye. Several of the dogs required extensive dental treatments and some of the dogs had heart murmurs. The defendant was offered the opportunity to surrender the dogs into ISPCA care but refused, with the result that dogs were detained for 19 months pending the outcome of the court hearing. Judge Philip O’Leary ordered the forfeiture of the dogs to the ISPCA last Friday, after convicting their former owner under the Animal Health and Welfare Act (AHWA) 2013. While most of the dogs are already reserved and going to their forever homes, Snowball and Sally are currently in ISPCA care, looking for their chance of a happy home, after being detained for 19 months in ISPCA care. Today's Happy Tail is from Holly who adopted Jane back in July 2021. 🐶 Here is how Jane is getting on at her Forever Home: “We adopted Jane back in July 2021 from ISPCA Wicklow, at first when we went to go see her we were worried about how she’d get on with our smaller dog Harley as we’d heard some sight hounds aren’t best paired with small dogs. But the two immediately got on and nowadays Jane loves to try and steal Harley’s toys in hopes of getting him to play with her. When we first brought Jane home she was a bit nervous about living in a house and had no idea how to get onto the couches or how to play with her new toys, however that quickly changed and her absolute favourite places to sleep now are under the covers in someone’s bed or under the blanket on one of the couches. She loves playing with toys and going for spins in the car. She also thinks she’s a small dog and will try her best to climb onto anyone’s lap despite being bigger than the chair. She’s not happy unless she’s squeezed right in beside someone on the couch and is very offended when we leave in the car and she doesn’t get to come for the spin. She loves attention and regularly stops on walks when someone is standing nearby in hopes of getting extra pets which we all think is very funny and cute. Since being adopted she’s been all around Ireland from Mayo to Wexford and while she’s still a bit unsure of the waves, she loves running on the beach and digging in the sand. Jane has been such an amazing addition to the family and fit right in immediately. She’s so loving and caring and we’d highly recommend adopting a sight hound as they make such great family pets! We were so lucky to find Jane and have her join our family!” We would like to give a huge thank you to Holly for sending us this lovely update on how Jane is getting on! 💙 Would you be ready to welcome a new furrever family member into your home? We also have lots of wonderful dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, horses, ponies and donkeys; and rabbits, ready to meet you. Please consider adopting and visit https://ispca.ie/adoptions 🐾

The ISPCA is deeply disappointed and concerned to hear the recent announcement from the Minister for Rural and Community Development and local TD, Heather Humphreys, outlining a plan for XL Bully dogs to be banned, under new regulations to be introduced later this year, implemented in two phases between October and February. This change in legislation is deeply worrying for responsible dog owners who already comply with the legislation, but a change in legislation would also make it illegal for animal charities like the ISPCA to rehome any banned dog breeds. The ISPCA have a total of 211 dogs in their care currently waiting for responsible new homes. Of those, 68 dogs are restricted breeds with 28 potentially falling under the definition of an XL Bully. The ISPCA is also highlighting a risk of dog abandonment of this breed following a ban, and the ISPCA’s own Animal Rehabilitation Centres are already full, as are many other rescue groups around the country and rehoming challenges is already a serious issue. Today's Happy Tail is from Paul who adopted Donna back in October 2022. 🐶 Do you remember our "Old School Bachelor Farmer" rescue case? We are more than happy to share that one of the pups, Donna, is now living very happily with Paul and his family. Here is how Donna is getting on at her Forever Home: "We agreed to foster Donna for a couple of weeks in October 2022. Within a few hours of her coming home we knew we were not letting her go. Donna was very nervous when she came to us. Over time she has gained confidence and is such a key member of our family now. She loves her walks, trips in the car and keeping us company in the evenings. Donna loves to meet other dogs, the bigger the better. She is very clever watching all our routines and knowing who will give her the next treat. She gives everyone a great welcome home. Loud noises and hoovers are not a problem. Donna is nervous around footballs and people she does not know. Once she gets to know you all is well. Recently she has started to play with a tennis ball in the garden which is great fun to be part of. We would be lost without her. It is fantastic work that you do in the ISPCA and we encourage everyone to adopt a pet." We are extremely grateful to Paul for sending us this lovely update on how Donna is getting on! 💙 Would you be ready to welcome a new furrever family member into your home? We also have lots of wonderful dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, horses, ponies and donkeys; and rabbits, ready to meet you.
