A very interesting interview with our CEO, Alan Merriman in today's The Irish Times discussing the importance of investing in private market opportunities and the role it plays in diversification. Alan emphasises that private markets enable clients to "diversify and expand their wealth," in contrast to index tracking funds that can introduce concentration risk. "If you’re allocating just to stocks and bonds, you’re relying on luck. You think you’re diversified, but you’re actually not. To de-risk, you need to have a very considered approach to investing,” Alan says, suggesting that a “healthy focus” on alternatives, along with stocks and bonds, is a better approach. “It’s a ‘need to have’, rather than a ‘nice to have’,” adding that another issue is that “the right opportunities aren’t publicly traded”. In the latest article from our "Thoughts From The Road series", Karl Rogers, Chief Investment Officer with Elkstone, sheds light on venture as an asset class. "Diversification within venture is your best friend—from both a risk reduction and increased return expectation. While funds have the largest dispersion of returns within PE markets, the power law enables a similar risk from venture as PE buyout when you put a portfolio of venture funds together, either directing yourself or investing into a fund of venture funds; this is a good way to get exposure to the asset class from a risk-return perspective." 🚨 🚨 🚨 Our second annual report is launched today at an event in Dublin Castle where guest of honour, Minister Neale Richmond TD will speak to over 200 Charter signatories and stakeholders. The report shows that among the Charter’s original signatories, female representation on boards increased to 39pc at the beginning of this year, up from 33pc at the same time in 2022. On executive committees, the figure increased to 37pc, up from 33pc in 2022. And at CEO level, 25pc of these firms’ had female CEOs, whereas in 2022 the figure was 21pc. The increases were not confined to board and senior management level. Firms who signed up the Charter in 2023 saw large increases in female representation at junior management level – with representation increasing from 43pc at the start of 2023 to 52pc at the start of 2024. Led by industry and supported by the Government of Ireland, Ireland’s Women in Finance Charter underpins the financial services industry’s ambition to see increased participation of women at all levels, including junior, middle and senior management, leadership and board roles within financial services organisations based in Ireland. Our Head of Venture Niall McEvoy spoke to Vish Gain of Silicon Republic on what do venture capital investors look for in founders? Investors want to be able to see anywhere between 12 to 24 months into the future of the start-up from an execution perspective. More importantly, they want to be convinced the founder or founding team has the breadth of execution, experience and skills to see through the plan. Some of the key insights from Niall for the founder community includes: 💡 Be on top of their subject matter and numbers. 👨💼 Be able to convince investors that they are the right people to execute the business idea proposed. ✔️ Know who at least the first three or four hires for your company will be #Elkstone #Venture #Investment #VentureCapital #AlternativesSpecialists

Our Head of Venture Niall McEvoy spoke to Vish Gain of Silicon Republic about the Irish venture ecosystem and the need to incentivise entrepreneurship to foster innovation and better support our early stage founders. “Right now, there’s an overreliance on entrepreneurial reliefs on the exit side – even though very few start-ups actually get to the exit stage. Success builds generational success – and this is why it’s so important that we’re backing the best indigenous Irish founders to scale their businesses here locally through domestic and international VC funding. Given the absolute high-risk profile of early-stage entrepreneurship, and the risk taken by these people – these are the future economic builders of the country – I think we need to find a better way to incentivise them to take that risk" Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eZiAZYTV #Elkstone #AlternativesSpecialists #VentureCapital

'Long-term capital shouldn’t mind a lockup when a lockup is required.' But our polling shows European fund selectors are not any more comfortable with the illiquidity of private assets and alts. Successive surveys of some of Europe’s most influential fund buyers at our Montreux and Berlin events show a consistent majority of firms have been growing their use of alts over the last few years. Many said they’d like to access alts but liquidity was a problem. More still said they would accept lower return for greater liquidity. We spoke to some specialist selectors to peel beneath the surface. Many thanks to: Karl Rogers, chief investment officer of Elkstone (quoted above); Gregor Rossen Rosen, senior portfolio manager alternatives at Aegon Asset Management; Trine Sellæg Aulie, head of fund selection DNB WM Investment Office. And lending a voice from asset management: Loes Wingens, head of wholesale international sales at asset manager Van Lanschot Kempen Investment Management. We asked 80 top European fund selectors: 📈 What percentage of your overall assets are in private assets? 🌳 Is private markets and alternatives a growing area for your firm? ⚖ Are you increasing your exposure to alts at the expense of... 👐 How is your access to private assets and alternatives? 😝 If greater liquidity meant a lower return, would these assets still be interesting? 🚀 When will you be operationally ready to implement Eltifs?
