Yesterday I discussed new ideas on sustainable mobility as part of the strategic session “Future Urban and Suburban Mobility Services” part of the Transport Research Arena (TRA) event in Dublin. I talked about the solution we are planning for the 10 Mission Cities part of the #HorizonEurope REALLOCATE project. I argued that high tech solutions are not the best way to achieve sustainable mobility in cities, but it is about transforming streets into inclusive, green, safe and future-proof urban spaces, where communities live and thrive. So not a dystopian future with self driving vehicles, but an inclusive, safe and accessible future where children can safely walk and cycle to school on their own.

It has been an inspiring REALLOCATE project consortium visit in Lyon! During the last three days, we have been able to reach new milestones for the project and keep on building valuable synergies between horizontal partners and the ten cities currently involved. We have also been lucky enough to visit a range of sites to see the amazing work that Ville de Lyon and the Métropole de Lyon have been working on in recent years. A huge systemic transformation that is creating a much more sustainable, safe and vibrant environment for active mobility. Over 100 school catchment areas have already been transformed, car lanes have been eliminated and cycling is currently increasing by over 15% a year. It was equally interesting to meet and listen to two of the advisory board members Tom Rye and Melissa Bruntlett who gave fantastic keynote presentations that led to valuable discussions and gave new ideas to all of us involved. Step by step we create new pathways forward! #sustainablecities #pedestrians #humancentredcities #activemobility #sustainablemobility #transformation #Reallocate

10 years ago this road in Ville de Lyon was an 8-lane highway. Now it has 👉 ➡ 2 bike lanes 🚲 🛴 ➡ 3 lanes for #PublicTransport ➡ 2 car lanes ➡ plenty of space and greenery for strolling pedestrians 🚶♀️and children to enjoy! 🌳 The rain water 🌧 flows directly where it is needed - no additional irrigation is required for the green features. 🚦 Blind people benefit from the raised elements separating the bike lanes from the pedestrian areas, as well as the special gadgets (handed out for free by the City of Lyon) which tell them if a traffic light is on green or red and which road they are on - they work on all traffic lights in the area of the Métropole de Lyon (well - 99.9% of them). 👏 The facts speak for themselves. There is nothing more to add, other than well done Lyon & thanks for sharing during the REALLOCATE study visit!

👋 Good morning Ville de Lyon! Good morning REALLOCATE partners! Great to be here with Deputy Mayor of Lyon Valentin Lungenstrass and Vice-President (Metropole of Lyon) Fabien BAGNON learning how our host city is moving #SustainableMobility forward! With new cycling 🚲 paths, pedestrian 🚶♀️ areas and 🚗 parking measures, the vision is a city where citizens can move freely wherever they live, in particular school children!

📢 Welcome to Lyon's superblocks! These partially pedestrianised streets were created two years ago directly with local residents and school children. Many children have since shifted to travelling to school by bike or on foot 🚲 🚶♀️! This initiative was an experiment by the City, implemented with a small team, without architects or outsourcing. Pierre Soulard of Métropole de Lyon explained: "We made mistakes, we learned from them, and we achieved huge successes, fast. Sometimes, you just need to dare and get things done!"

Our society needs green, liveable and #SafeStreets for children to move around in, so they can explore, learn about risk and lead independent and happy lives! The way we move around our streets has an invisible impact on our well-being; cycling 🚲 and walking 🚶♀️ 🚶♂️ not only get us from A to B, but these active modes of travel reduce obesity, depression and social isolation 🤝 . 📢 A big THANK YOU to our expert advisory board member Melissa Bruntlett for reminding us of the real human reasons for re-designing our streets and the way we move!
