The aviation industry is an energy-intensive one and faces its own set of decarbonisation challenges, where many low carbon and renewable energy solutions such as electrification are currently not fit for purpose. This is where sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) can play a vital role, as it is a viable and scalable type of biofuel which can be blended at a ratio of up to 50% with conventional jet fuel. This makes it an exciting option for enabling the sector to decarbonise at scale today using existing infrastructure. While we lay the foundations for tomorrow’s low carbon energy systems, Shell is delivering high impact solutions that enable our customers in hard-to-abate industries to meet their current energy needs while driving forward their emissions reduction journey. One such customer is Emirates which has used SAF supplied by Shell to power several of its flights from Dubai International Airport and London Heathrow.
