R-EV-VING UP In 2022, Indonesia’s EV market was valued at US$ 533 million. With a projected CAGR growth rate of 20.9%, this market is expected to reach a value of US$ 2 billion by 2029. The country has set a very ambitious target for its EV market. By 2025, Indonesia aims to have 2.5 million EV users. As of now, monthly sales have struggled to cross 2500. The potential is clearly there. Indonesia sits on the world’s largest nickel reserve and is also the highest producer of this crucial raw material. It also has significant reserves of aluminium, cobalt, and copper. It has a large population, with growing income. As a result, Indonesia can play a dual role in the global EV market: both as a supplier of EV components and as an EV consumer. Foreign direct investment (FDI) has started flowing into the nickel and EV sectors. In the last 3 years alone, the government has signed deals worth more than US$ 15 billion with international companies for nickel mining, refining, and battery manufacturing in the country. The current EV market has seen a flurry of launches by Chinese companies. Last weekend, at a local auto show, Wuling’s Air EV and Hozon Auto’s Neta-V were prominently displayed, with offers of instant discounts and cars being offered as prizes.
