Alexis Izor is a Senior Grants & Contracts Specialist in the Seattle Human Services Department’s Youth and Family Empowerment (YFE) division. They have worked at Seattle Human Services for four years.
What is your role at Seattle Human Services?
I am currently in an Out of Class position as a Senior Grants & Contracts Specialist in YFE. My permanent position is Out of School Times Meals Coordinator in the Food & Nutrition Unit.
What made you want to work in human services?
My professional background before coming to the City was all in nonprofits, and I’ve always felt drawn to and motivated by opportunities to support marginalized communities. I think the work that HSD does contributes in really meaningful ways to healthy, accessible, thriving communities, and I feel good about being able to contribute my time and talents to that goal.
How has your job changed in recent years?
I’ve changed jobs a lot! I’ve been working in Out of Class assignments since fall 2022, so I’ve gone from HSD to Department of Neighborhoods on Seattle Office for Civil Rights, and now back to HSD. I love getting to experience new departments, learn new skills, and meet so many amazing people, both inside and outside the City.
What do you love about your job?
Over the last six years, I’ve loved having opportunities to move around the City and explore so many different roles. I love the passion in HSD, and in my current role and team, I’ve really appreciated everyone’s patience and support as I once again took on a new body of work. As a Senior Grants & Contracts Specialist, I enjoy being able to support agencies who are doing great work in their communities, and I like looking for ways to demystify the City funding processes and requirements.
How do you contribute to HSD’s overarching goals related to racial equity?
Equity is a driving motivator for me personally and professionally. I’m active in HSD’s Change Team, AAPI Caucus, and LGBTQIA+ affinity group; as well as the Citywide AAPI Caucus.
What motivates you or keeps you going?
I try to live my life with the maxim of leaving things better than you found them. Not only do I have a vested interest in the world becoming a better place every day, but I want to leave a more equitable, just, and inclusive world for future generations.
Outside of work, my hobbies (including roller derby, reading, and playing in a couple local brass bands) help me rest and spend time with my community.
What’s one piece of advice for HSD newcomers or recent graduates in your field?
Take advantage of all the opportunities HSD has to meet and collaborate with people outside of your immediate team. HSD is a big department full of lots of amazing people, so whether it’s Change Team, caucuses, event planning, or just working on the puzzle near Michael and Shukri’s corner, look for ways to meet more of your colleagues!
