  • Classic banks can offer crypto asset services without actually holding digital assets or by being involved in direct trading on the exchange. Let's explore the three fundamental operating models, along with their pros and cons. Providing Crypto Exposure Banks offer various crypto derivatives without allowing clients to hold actual crypto-assets. This typically means offering ETFs (or perhaps CFDs) that are exposed to crypto asset valuations, enabling clients to take advantage of the opportunities without directly holding the assets. This approach offers a quicker go-to-market strategy; however, some clients may still prefer direct trading. Pros: - Quick Implementation: Faster to market with minimal adjustments to existing infrastructure. - Regulated Environment: Operates within the bank's regulatory framework, ensuring compliance. - Lower Risk: Reduces the risk associated with managing and securing actual crypto assets. Cons: - No Direct Ownership: Clients do not own the actual crypto assets, which might not appeal to some investors. - Limited Control: Investors have less control over their investments compared to direct trading. Partnering with Crypto Specialists This model involves enabling direct investments in crypto through partnerships with specialized crypto -asse service providers, such as Coinbase. This allows clients to trade assets directly, though key services are delegated to the partner, making the bank dependent on them. Pros: - Direct Trading: Clients can directly trade and own crypto assets. - Expertise Leveraging: Banks can leverage the specialized expertise and infrastructure of the crypto partner. - Enhanced Offerings: Broadens the range of services offered to clients. - Prompt implementation: While it requires more effort than introducing ETFs, the integration with one partner can be completed within a few months. Cons: - Dependency: Reliance on the partner for key services and infrastructure. - Shared Revenue: Profit sharing with the partner can reduce the bank's revenue. Directly Introducing Crypto Trading Banks can cooperate with partners such as crypto exchanges and custodians to offer direct crypto trading for clients. This model aligns more naturally with classic banks, as they can own the core services and apply their security policies. However, it requires more preparation and time to market. Pros: - Full Control: Banks maintain control over the trading infrastructure and policies. - Integrated Security: Ability to apply existing security measures and regulatory compliance. Enhanced Trust: Clients may trust the bank more with direct involvement. Cons: - Longer Implementation: Requires significant time and resources to integrate. - Complex Integration: Involves complex integration with existing systems and processes. • Traditional asset manager are planning to increase their Bitcoin exposure, but they face several challenges. Let's review these challenges and explore the actions you can take to address them. Legal Challenges: Regulatory Framework: Before the implementation of MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation) in the EU, there were no favorable regulatory frameworks. Now, you can consult with a MiCA expert to prepare for compliance with these new regulations. Business Challenges: Market Valuation: The current valuation of the cryptocurrency market exceeds $2 trillion, driven primarily by demand without enough underlying assets supporting it. The volatility of this asset class can impact institutional valuation, yet the opportunity is significant. Discuss the business potential and associated risks with a Crypto Asset category expert. Strategic Challenges: Innovation Leadership: Innovation often comes from external or bottom-up sources, resulting in experts typically not occupying strategic roles within the organization. Consult with an expert who has strategic-level experience with traditional finance players to effectively integrate innovative solutions into your strategic framework. Positioning Challenges: Market Perception: Does cryptocurrency come with a dark, suspicious image, or does it convey a vibe of cutting-edge innovation vibe? Consult a research team to understand trends in market perception. Technological Challenges: Technical Integration: Even limited service offerings can present significant technical integration challenges, not to mention white-label solutions or fully integrated systems. Speak with an expert experienced in crypto asset services for traditional finance. Currently, no banks in CEE are offering crypto asset services. As we engage with banks in this region, the market potential is clear. However, only a few are in the exploratory stage, which is a natural first step on this journey.  To begin with the 'why,' we have identified three main reasons to commit to this vision: 1. Increase revenues.  In the context of crypto assets, new products can be offered to customers. During the initial period, a premium pricing can be applied due to the novelty of the services 2. Market opportunity in the segment  There is an opportunity to realize business benefits in an untapped and likely growing segment. 3. Differentiation By their very nature, crypto-asset services can appeal to a more digitally-oriented, younger clientele and foster innovation in communication However, the path to achieving this is fundamentally unclear for several reasons shared by CEE countries:  - Multi-faceted expertise needs The required expertise is diverse and can hardly be found in a single person. Skills needed include legal, technical, and crypto asset specific knowledge - Unclear path There is no clear path forward. Depending on the bank's position and maturity in asset management, technology, crypto know-how, their intrinsic culture and way of working can lead to different roadmap to success. - Multi-faceted integrations Integration requirements are multi-faceted. Again, such a service is not just technical. The integration would need to cover processes, internal know-how, new partner and vendor vetting, policies, and risk management as well. At Dorsum, we specialize in guiding traditional banks through this journey. Our team, led by Peter Kanti, offers comprehensive support at every step, ensuring a smooth integration of crypto asset services.
