Dennis Schroder, captain of the German national basketball team, has been announced as the flag bearer for Germany at the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony on Friday. He will be joined by Anna-Maria Wagner, a German judoka. Schroder, who earned the title of FIBA World Cup 2023 MVP and won a gold medal, is only the second German flag bearer without previous Olympic experience, following NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki.

The day the Nets traded Johnson’s longtime friend Mikal Bridges and signaled their intent to tank, that put veterans such as Johnson, Dorian Finney-Smith, Dennis Schroder, Ben Simmons and Bojan Bogdanovic on the trade block. But the latter trio are all playing on expiring deals, so they could be kept to preserve 2025 cap space. Moving Johnson and Finney-Smith seems logical, with the Johnson projected to fetch more in return. “We’ve had some conversations with all the vets on the team because it does weigh on people,” Marks said last week. “And I don’t try to sort of breeze over that because it’s a family, and you want to say, ‘Hey, this is a close-knit group.’ It’s a close locker room in there, and when one of their own leaves, it hits home.

Shaking off a slow start, Germany defeated France, 70-65, in a tuneup game in Sud de France Arena on Monday. Victor Wembanyama (illness) was ruled out for the exhibition on the way to the 2024 Olympic Games.

Dennis Schröder stood out for Germany with 23 points and was followed properly only by new Bayern Munich player, Oscar da Silva, with 15 points. Johannes Voigtmann added eight points with 11 rebounds. The match was also marked by an altercation between Evan Fournier and Schröder, which saw the French player getting ejected.

Bojan Bogdanovic, Cam Johnson, other veteran Nets in play for immediate trades

Anticipation is already mounting leaguewide that the newly acquired Bojan Bogdanovic as well as a slew of players from the Nets’ roster last season — from obvious trade candidates like Dorian Finney-Smith and Dennis Schroeder all the way up to sharpshooter Cam Johnson — are in play for immediate trades.
Heck, will Schroder even be there past his efforts for Germany at this summer’s Olympics? “Brooklyn is a really cool, great organization, quite family-oriented,” Schroder said a few days ago in his hometown paper, Braunschweig Zeitung. “I’d definitely like to stick around for the long haul. My agent and I feel like the Nets liked how I contributed.
Dennis Schroeder on Brooklyn: 'I'd definitely like to stick around for the long haul'

“Brooklyn is a really cool, great organization, quite family-oriented. I’d definitely like to stick around for the long haul — My agent and I feel like the Nets liked how I contributed,” Schroder recently said in an interview with Ute Berndt of German outlet Braunschweiger Zeitung.
“There were two reasons why we didn’t communicate this in advance,” explains Kohler. “Until a few hours before kick-off, it wasn’t clear whether Dennis would even play. “And if we had communicated it beforehand, the media would have been all over us. We are a small village association where most of the work is done through voluntary work. The stewards, the cashiers and the staff who work the drinks stand and the grill – they are all volunteers. We wouldn’t have been able to cope with the media hype.” There are no plans for Schroder to make a second appearance but, for one afternoon at least, the worlds of amateur German soccer and the NBA collided.
