Why the Morehead Honors College?

At the Morehead Honors College, our goal is to combine the high-engagement educational experience of a small liberal arts college with the access to academic and extracurricular opportunities associated with a major research institution.

We strive to empower our students to use their gifts and expertise to make the UGA campus, the Athens community, and the world a better place. We also strive to offer students the full suite of resources they will need to help them flourish throughout their college years.

Honors courses

More than 250 courses carry an Honors designation. These courses are smaller in size than traditional courses. Smaller class sizes allow faculty to use innovative teaching methods to introduce students to their fields and allow students to cultivate strong mentoring relationships with their faculty.

All students are required to take a minimum of nine Honors sections and maintain a 3.4 cumulative UGA GPA to graduate with Honors. Students interested in graduating with High or Highest Honors are required to complete capstone coursework focused on:

  1. A research-based thesis
  2. An internship
  3. Graduate coursework

Undergraduate research

The Center for Undergraduate Research (CURO), housed in the Morehead Honors College, is open to ALL undergraduates at the University of Georgia. CURO promotes undergraduate research by engaging top faculty, encouraging undergraduate students to complete research, and helping students find lifelong mentors.

Honors students can participate in CURO from their very first days on campus and may continue to participate throughout their undergraduate years.

CURO offers several funding opportunities for current UGA undergraduates, including a semester-long research award, a summer fellowship program, and conference funding. For more information, visit the CURO website.

Honors internships

Each summer, the Honors Internship Program offers students the opportunity to live and work in New York, Savannah, and Washington, D.C. Internship placements include congressional offices, government agencies, think tanks, media companies, law firms, and nonprofit organizations.

Travel and study abroad

The Honors International Scholars Program encourages students to engage in opportunities abroad. Scholars use their stipends to fund overseas study, intensive language training, internships, public service, and research.

Graduate courses

Honors students with sufficient background are encouraged to participate in graduate courses.

Double Dawgs

The Double Dawgs program is open to all University of Georgia undergraduates and allows qualified students to pursue coursework leading to a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in five years or less. Visit the Double Dawgs website for more information.

Advising and registration

The Morehead Honors College provides access to a team of professional advisors who can individually assist students. Honors students are also given priority registration for all classes taught at the university.

Career preparation

To assist in internship, scholarship, graduate work, or job applications, Honors staff members work alongside students to review cover letters, resumes, personal statements, and interview skills.
