Will JD.COM acquire Evri? 🚚 Delivery firm Evri (rebranded from Hermes in 2022) has had some turbulent times over recent years. It now appears it may be changing ownership again -- this time with serious interest from Chinese super-retailer JD.COM. Earlier this year JD bid to take over electrical retailer Currys plc. JD.com has very deep pockets and a long-term perspective. I believe we will see them taking increasing interest in opportunities for expansion, particularly in European markets. TVS SCS Partners With Manchester Metropolitan To Lead AI Innovation TVS SCS has now applied for a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with MMU, which will focus on the technological solutions that may be available to assist with supply chain solutions through the use of AI. This partnership is a testament to TVS SCS’ quest for continuous development of its tech capabilities. TVS Supply Chain Solutions Limited, a global supply chain solutions provider and one of the largest and fastest growing integrated supply chain solutions providers in India, announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, TVS SCS UK and Europe are working in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) to drive forward the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in its business. This partnership focusses on AI governance and how to implement it as a core structure throughout the business. TVS SCS have been working with the university, initially through the Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) which supports knowledge exchange between higher education providers and industry. The apprehension currently exhibited by the US government towards Chinese tech./manufacturing evokes memories of the caution and wariness shown by both the government and American companies towards Japanese technology during the 1980s. Back then, Japan was rapidly ascending as an economic powerhouse, particularly in the tech sector, leading to concerns about its dominance and potential threats to American competitiveness. This fear manifested in various ways, including trade tensions, regulatory scrutiny, and even cultural anxieties, as seen in films and media of the time. Similarly, today's unease surrounding Chinese technology stems from concerns about national security, intellectual property theft, and geopolitical rivalry. Case Study of 4PL Service: When importing goods from China, if you encounter anti-dumping products, the tariff amount is very high, especially in European countries and the United States. Without discussing politics, we have received many entrustments from customers asking us how to reduce tariffs. My latest Supply Chain Matters Apple supply chain commentary focuses on Tim Cook's Southeast Asia business trip last week that has brought forth indications of added Asia based sourcing and production options to include Vietnam and Indonesia among other nations. I pose a rather question as to whether there will be considerations toward a US near-shored or domestic iPhone production presence to complement the various new advanced semiconductor processor fabs planned for the US over the coming 2-3 years. The current restructuring in China may pose challenges, but it is a necessary step towards consolidation and improvement. These measures will pave the way for a brighter future. Similarly, in Singapore, we must take decisive steps to allow society to catch a break and keep up with the consolidation. Everything is moving too fast, becoming too costly, and too demanding for those who struggle to keep up. Unlike professionals and foreigners, citizens cannot easily quit and move elsewhere. It's crucial that we prioritize citizens and understand that everyone has different paces and preferences, and unique challenges that need to be addressed. Despite recent wage increases, it is evident that the prevailing mood in Japan will not improve as long as the weak yen continues to cause a substantial erosion of purchasing power. The impact of the weak yen has gone beyond just depleting financial resources and has crept into the psychological realm of the Japanese, causing significant unease and insecurity, especially among young people who have not had the opportunity to enjoy themselves. It is imperative to understand that wage increases alone will not restore confidence and optimism in the current economic climate. It is crucial to address the root cause of the issue, the weak yen, through appropriate measures to stabilize the currency.
