Hiring Sentiment in Singapore Remains Soft, But Most Sectors Still Looking to Boost Headcount Despite a generally soft hiring sentiment, 44% of employers plan to hire for the July-September period, according to the latest survey. The finance and real estate sectors are notably cautious, with the net employment outlook dropping 30 percentage points to 15%. However, the transport, logistics, and automotive sector shows resilience with a robust 47% net outlook. Other highlights: - Communication services: -33% outlook, the only negative sector. - Overall net employment outlook: 20%. - Positive outlook in healthcare, life sciences, industrials, and materials sectors. - Smaller firms (10-49 employees) report the strongest outlook at 46%. Richard's Journey From Capricious Shifts to Personal Fulfillment 从电商招商专家到酒吧逍遥神仙 Two years ago, during the COVID-19 lockdown, I had the fortune of crossing paths with Richard while working as a talent project manager for JD Group in Southeast Asia. Among my responsibilities was the critical task of recruiting a seller growth manager to rejuvenate the company’s revenue streams across the region's eCommerce platforms. Richard, in his early 40s, stood out from the crowd of candidates. His extensive market insight, honed through years at Amazon, eclipsed many younger contenders. His engagement with the latest industry trends remained undiminished, making him a unique asset. Despite concerns about his age and a three-year hiatus from the corporate world, I advocated for Richard’s candidacy. His salary expectations, aligned with his previous compensation at Amazon, and his readiness to transition from business ownership—liquidating his stake in a luxurious nighttime bar in Sanya—further aligned with our needs. This bar, a relic of his past in a city known for its opulence and excessive leisure spending, became an unaffordable liability due to the pandemic's impact on tourism and local spending. Richard’s integration into the JD Group was nothing short of transformative. He brought renewed energy and dedication, quickly dispelling any initial reservations about his time away from the corporate sector. However, his journey took a sudden turn when JD Group decided to exit the eCommerce market in Southeast Asia, citing strategic realignments. This decision coincided with the end of his six-month probationary period, rendering Richard jobless with minimal severance pay. Ironically, the bar he once owned began to thrive again as China's wealthy indulged in post-lockdown spending. This experience underscored a harsh reality: even deep expertise in a field doesn’t guarantee stability in the unpredictable terrains of China’s political and corporate environments. Recognizing the need for a more stable and predictable future, Richard decided to leave China. He now owns a bar in a smaller, progressive nation in the West, pursuing a life of certainty and resilience, away from the capricious shifts that once defined his professional life in China. Richard's story is a testament to the complexities of navigating careers in volatile markets and the personal recalibrations that sometimes become necessary for long-term stability and happiness.

The number of overseas tourists visiting Japan surpassed 3 million in a single month, reaching a new record high. However, the tourism industry faces challenges such as over-tourism and issues with accommodating foreign visitors. Personally, I believe that Japan's tourism industry for foreigners should be led by those who love Japan the most. This is because they have a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and customs, enabling them to provide better services. Given that many Japanese people tend to have an insular mindset and lack exposure to foreign cultures, providing services from a foreign perspective is often challenging. In the fast-paced, demanding corporate environment of Hong Kong, employees find it challenging to balance their well-being and productivity. Despite society’s improving awareness of wellness and prevention, workplace wellness has languished as ‘good-to-have’, especially under the challenging economic environment. Employers are facing significant resource constraints, as are other key stakeholders such as payors and providers. There are many health-tech-enabled employee engagement initiatives with mixed uptake and outcomes. The overall sentiment is that more needs to be done to support the employees whilst balancing the spending of employers and payors. Strategic Focus on Efficiency and Profitability: In response to global economic pressures, Korean businesses are increasingly focusing on restructuring and enhancing efficiency to drive profitability. Companies are increasingly prioritizing sustainable growth and meticulous resource management. This shift is a strategic move to navigate through current economic uncertainties, ensuring they remain competitive and resilient. 2. Deceleration of Salary Inflation: Over recent years, salaries in Korea have seen significant increases, often outpacing other currencies, even when measured against the strong US dollar. However, this rapid rise is now stabilizing, reflecting the broader economic slowdown. Both multinational corporations and local businesses are recalibrating their salary structures. As this trend continues, it will be interesting to monitor how compensation strategies evolve to maintain talent competitiveness in the market. 3. Unionization and Labor Movements: The Korean labor market is characterized by strong union presence, which plays a unique role in shaping business practices. Witnessing Samsung’s first-ever strike during my visit highlighted the ongoing discussions around wages, bonuses, and organizational changes. As companies strive for greater efficiency, union activities are expected to intensify, potentially reshaping the business landscape and influencing labor relations across industries. 4. Rise of Startups and SMEs: Despite perceptions of a slow market, Korea boasts a thriving ecosystem of startups and SMEs. These agile and innovative enterprises are driving significant demand for tailored HR services, distinct from those of larger corporations. Their focus is on developing robust HR frameworks that can support their rapid growth and adaptability, highlighting the dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit within the Korean market. 5. Post-Pandemic Growth Adjustments: The explosive growth seen by many companies in 2022 is now moderating to more sustainable levels. The exceptional circumstances of the pandemic era have transitioned to a more normalized pace of expansion. Lunch & Learn Session on Employee Well-being by HKPC Thank you for the invitation from HKPC. It provided a wonderful opportunity to have meaningful discussions about employee well-being with a diverse group of HR experts and company leaders. I regret that due to time limitations, I couldn't address all the questions from participants during the session. However, I'm more than happy to address any inquiries right here: During the session, one participant raised an important concern about promoting coaching within their company, as they were encountering resistance from employees. It's essential to recognize that coaching truly begins with the coaching session itself, and our everyday conversations may not always revolve around asking and answering questions. Therefore, it's crucial to foster a coaching-friendly environment before the actual sessions. In simpler terms, leaders should avoid being judgmental in their day-to-day interactions to build trust with employees. Additionally, starting with brief coaching conversations can help the team become more comfortable with the coaching approach. When it comes to employee well-being, it's advisable for HR professionals and leaders to implement well-being programs that are both eudaimonic and scientifically informed, rather than solely focusing on activities that provide instant pleasure.
