Our 2023 Sustainability Report is a testament to our commitment to positive impact, and I invite you to explore its highlights. The selection of GRI allows us to report our most significant impacts on the economy, the environment, and our communities; highlighting our management of these impacts, and paving the way for further improvements and investments. We are a proud signatory of the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge, a joint commitment across the events and meetings industry to achieve the targets in the Paris Climate Accords, and our Report follows the recommendations and guidance from the “Roadmap to Net Zero for the Events Industry”, published by the NZCE.   Within the NZCE pledge, there are four main goals outlined; target setting, collaboration, measuring, and reporting, and we are proud that our Net Zero target is aligned with global industry expectations. Further to this we are pleased to share that we have, as a minimum, met the expectations set in the pledge and are over-achieving for certain areas - demonstrating our ambition, and commitment to lead by example, setting the pace for sustainable events in Hong Kong. NIE establishes DRivers, Enablers, and pathways of Adolescent developMent in Singapore (DREAMS), a longitudinal study of adolescents in secondary school. Led by Prof Kenneth Poon with Dr Melvin Chan and Dr Trivina Kang as Co-Lead Principal Investigators, the study aims to understand the development of teenagers during the formative stage of adolescence and identify ways to promote supportive environment for development in Singapore. And…an amazing Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Innovates Bangkok & GIST APEC Catalyst mini-reunion with Mild Karoon-ngampun, co-founder UPCYDE and Natalie Lerthatasilp, co-founder Carbonwize for How Young Thai Founders Are Using Lean Startup To Go From 0 to 1. Their insights into how they’re using Lean Startup tools & ecosystem mapping had the audience locked into the zone. The tools and processes work and it’s incredible how both of these sustainable solutions startups are using them to scale faster. Just last week, Carbonwize, a platform that simplifies carbon accounting and reporting, announced a strategic partnership with the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET). The initiative will significantly improve the process of greenhouse gas reporting among the SET’s 840+ listed companies. UPCYDE is preparing to announce some good news after wrapping two top programs in Europe, Germany’s Circular Valley and another in Copenhagen. Philanthropy - Green - Talents These are all important topics, but they do not link directly to Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship. Actually, they do. What can be better than doing good, raising talents, promoting Green and leveraging on resources from outside? Keep your eyes on us. We will continue to imagine new things.

Sirene Lim 林美莹's article on the benefits of play, even for adults, sums up the importance to promote 'playfulness' in Singapore beginning with our children. There is a consensus that Singapore's strength lies in its ability to organise and execute. Perhaps, it is time to set up an inter-ministry taskforce on Play to promote interdisciplinary research on play, to push for changes to polices in health, education and even workplace to incorporate playfulness, and to designate a National Play Month! https://lnkd.in/gvJ7EWbV

The Tokyo Governorship: Give Tabogami Consideration The election for the Tokyo governor is fast approaching. The press keeps trying to limit the discussion to Renho and Koike; without wasting time on their many faults, I would like to posit that more people give Tabogami serious consideration. In this time, of international uncertainty in Europe and Asia (and of course Asia), doesn't it make sense to elect a leader who has the respect of the SDF as the former leader of them and who knows how to implement their services in various forms of disasters. Japan has enough individuals who can provide advice on the economy and how to do projection mapping affordably, what it doesn't have is leaders with even half a brain about how to utlize the SDF both in times of peace and uncertainty. On a national basis, the last time an inexperienced chap took the leadership, the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred and his massive inexperience and lack of qualification became apparent. We shouldn't repeat that mistake again now. Musings of a permanent resident holding his breath...

Hong Kong is slated to host "one mega event every two days" in the coming six months, with the city adding 60 more events to this year's line-up. I'm proud to have attended and participated in some major mega events in the past, but I doubt I'll be able to attend the remaining packed schedule as frequently in the second half of the year.  The total number of mega events scheduled for 2024 now stands at 210, expected to bring in around 1.7 million travellers and contribute HK$4.3 billion to the local economy. While the variety of events is impressive, spanning sports, art, conferences, trade shows, and more, we should be cautious about over-relying on these "mega" designations. There needs to be clear criteria and standards established for what constitutes a true "mega" event - in terms of attendance, economic impact, media coverage, and overall quality of experience. The key will be ensuring these events actually drive local consumption through hotel stays, dining, and entertainment, rather than just bringing in short-term visitors. The Hong Kong government aims to play a "facilitator and director" role, while the industry needs to capitalise on the increased popularity and turn it into sustainable prosperity. It will be interesting to see how they strike the right balance and maximise the benefits of this packed calendar of mega events. Hong Kong Tourism Board

When Taiwan's former president Tsai Ing-wen initiated Taiwan's 'bilingual 2030' policy she even referenced #bilingual #hongkong and #Singapore but Taiwan's new education minister Cheng Ying-yao is dialling down on the ambitious goal despite bringing in English-language teaching for many programmes when he was president of National Sun Yat-sen university. So why the slowdown?
