Boardrooms have the innate power to change the future of a company and diversity is an important driver of the board’s effectiveness. Many thanks to the Women in Society Association (WiSA) of the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong School of Business for inviting me to participate in a dialogue on "Moving Forward to No-Single-Gender Boards" during their recent symposium. HKEx began to campaign for no-single-gender boards since 2021 and listed companies have till end of the year to appoint at least one woman director on their board. When it comes to fully unlocking the power of a Board, diversity of opinion cannot be emphasized enough.   Gender diverse Boards have proven to drive organizations towards greater profitability, improve transparency and increase accountability, and bring in disruptive innovation. We need to take steps to remove structural barriers which keep women leaders from progressing, provide mentoring and networking opportunities to help them grow, and create personalized development journeys for them to progress.   I believe in maximizing the power of different perspectives and backgrounds for better business outcomes. Including varying points of view in our decision-making, operations and actions is fundamental to establishing long-term client, social and financial value.   To remain competitive, Hong Kong companies must take necessary measures to enhance gender diversity on their boards, as both emerging and developed markets now require mandatory representation of women. I’ve been talking M&A with the Vietnam Investment Review. There are three clear characteristics emerging in Vietnam’s M&A space so far this year. Firstly, investors doing deals are those who look past current challenges and see the long-term strengths for Vietnam. Secondly, it is a buyers’ market, which means buyers are in a stronger position than sellers now. Buyers can demand better valuations and deal terms, and sellers either must accept the offer, or miss out on the deal. Given stretched balance sheets, waiting is no longer an option for some companies. Thirdly, companies with strong balance sheets and financial capacity can buy great assets that might not normally be available. When economic conditions are difficult, strong companies have a greater advantage than they do usually. We expect these three characteristics to define the M&A market in Vietnam for the remainder of 2024. Vietnam’s healthcare sector is thriving, offering great opportunities for investors. Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening: 1. Healthcare M&A Market: Recent M&A activity in Vietnam’s healthcare sector includes: •   Thomson Medical Group bought FV Hospital for USD 381.4 million. •   Raffles Medical Group acquired a majority stake in AIH. •   Warburg Pincus invested in Xuyen A Hospital. •   KKR took a majority stake in Medical Saigon Group. •   CVC Capital Partners obtained 60% of Phuong Chau Group. In pharmaceuticals, Dongwha Pharma acquired 51% of Trung Son Pharma, and Adamed Pharma bought 100% of Dat Vi Phu Pharmaceuticals JSC. With only 17% of Vietnam’s 1,400 hospitals privately owned, there’s a huge market to tap into. 2. Digital Healthcare Growth: The digital healthcare sector is booming with telehealth services like JioHealth, Med247, and eDoctor, and online pharmacies such as Buymed and POC Pharma. Major global funds are investing heavily, indicating confidence in the market’s growth. 3. Regulatory Developments: New regulations are enhancing healthcare quality and access: •   Stricter licensing and skills testing for medical practitioners. •   Foreign doctors must now demonstrate Vietnamese language proficiency. •   Mandatory digitalization of medical records and prescriptions. •   Encouraging public-private partnerships (PPPs) in healthcare facilities. 4. Investment Opportunities: Vietnam is attracting private investment through incentives like favorable land use fees and tax benefits. Notable projects include the development of pharmaceutical industrial parks in Ho Chi Minh City and Thai Binh province. 5. Medtech Start-ups: The medtech sector is set for substantial growth, with the market projected to hit USD 905.8 million by 2024. Key areas include electronic health records, telemedicine, AI for disease diagnosis, and smart wearables.
