  • Businesses Committing to SDGs: Assessing the Real Impact As businesses increasingly align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the challenge lies in measuring their true impact. According to the 2023 Global Sustainable Development Report, while 74% of the world's largest companies report on SDGs, only 10% report on the entire 2030 Agenda, and a mere 6% articulate their positive or negative impacts. This fragmented reporting landscape necessitates standardized mechanisms to accurately reflect private sector contributions toward global sustainability. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental Social Governance (ESG) are primary sustainability reporting methods, but their impacts are also debated. CSR reporting is not mandatory in most countries, and ESG lacks standardization, making its evaluations inconsistent. This insightful article by Pytrik Dieuwke Oosterhof, a Senior Sustainable Development Consultant and Founder of O-Land Consulting, examines the need for businesses to strengthen accountability and ensure their reports truly reflect their impact. To address these issues, the article suggests: - Critically examining ESG standards and aligning them with SDGs. - Implementing mandatory SDG reporting based on harmonized standards. - Developing standardized corporate reporting standards and a clear scorecard. - Strengthening corporate accountability to ensure accurate and meaningful reporting. • Re-thinking the 'G' in ESG According to Rajeev Peshawaria, the big problem with ESG is the over-reliance on the 'G' of governance. He argues that since governance is dictated by human behavior, HR professionals have a much bigger role to play in this area. The Volkswagen "Dieselgate" scandal is a prime example. Despite stringent regulations, VW used defeat devices to cheat on emissions tests, leading to real-world emissions vastly exceeding legal limits. This highlights how rules and financial penalties are not enough to prevent corporate misconduct. Peshawaria believes that instead of just focusing on compliance and risk management, companies need to proactively shape their culture and values. Only by transforming the mindset and behavior of employees can we truly address critical environmental and social challenges through ESG. The article argues that HR leaders should take a more active role in driving this cultural change, rather than leaving it solely to corporate governance frameworks.
