We were honored to participate in the prestigious Reception for I&T Awards 2024, organized by the Innovation and Technology Commission at the Central Government Office on 15 Jul 2024. More than 300 representatives from the local innovation and technology (I&T) sector, including scientists from our two research projects, were commended for their remarkable achievements in international competitions and exhibitions over the past year. We were pleased to showcase one of our award-winning inventions, "sST2 as a novel therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease". The Chief Executive, Mr. John Lee, led a VIP tour of our showcase and lauded the significance of our work. Building on the pioneering work of HKUST’s State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience, Hong Kong Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (HKCeND) is established as a research hub under the Health@InnoHK cluster for advanced research in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. We strive to deliver innovative diagnostics and therapeutics targeting aging and neurodegenerative diseases to significantly improve the lives of patients, caregivers, and families. We team up with prominent research investigators to collectively establish state-of-the-art technological platforms for the generation of new insights on disease pathways, identification of disease-associated targets and potential drug candidates, and development of effective diagnostics, prognostics and clinical interventions for neurodegenerative diseases.

We are delighted to share that our team has been honored with 3 awards at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2024. One of our award-winning inventions is an innovative strategy targeting soluble ST2 (sST2), a blood protein, for the development of Alzheimer's disease therapeutics. This invention garnered the Prize of the Chinese Delegation for Invention and Innovation, as well as the Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury. Moreover, we are proud to have been awarded a Gold Medal for our novel "one-for-many" genome editing approach, designed to treat familial Alzheimer's disease. The #HKUST and #HKCeND scientists have developed a revolutionary blood test that can accurately identify Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its early stage, known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This blood test is a game-changer for AD diagnosis, providing a global solution that can benefit diverse ethnic populations. ✅ High accuracy: achieve a remarkable accuracy rate of over 96% for AD and 87% for MCI ✅ Brain damage detection: indicate the development of brain damage (i.e. Aβ pathology) ✅ Diverse populations: applicable across different ethnic populations, including Chinese and European ✅ Comprehensive analysis: simultaneously measure the levels of 21 proteins in multiple crucial biological pathways, achieving multi-dimensional analysis of an individual's AD status. In the interview, Prof. Cheung discussed the significant progress made by his research team in the study of adult stem cell aging. One of the scientific breakthroughs was the discovery of the CPEB4 protein and its crucial role in maintaining mitochondrial functions and preventing cellular senescence. This groundbreaking finding offers promising insights into the reversal of the aging process. The team is currently investigating the potential of CPEB4 as a therapeutic target, to develop drugs for boosting mitochondrial function and energy production. The team is also developing a novel drug screening platform to address age-related diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis and sarcopenia, aiming to improve the health and well-being of the elderly and tackle the challenges posed by the aging population.
