Help Us Welcome HANA Center’s Next Executive Director - Danae Kovac

After a thorough and thoughtful process, the Board of HANA Center is pleased to announce that Danae Kovac will be the next Executive Director of HANA Center. Danae, Deputy Director of HANA for the past four years, already plays a pivotal leadership role in shaping HANA's strategic vision and overseeing operations and programs to deliver on our mission. Her start date will be September 30, 2024. Current Executive Director Inhe Choi will then transition into a Senior Advisor role through December 31, 2024.

Danae has over 18 years of experience in nonprofit programming and management, and prior to HANA, she held positions as the Chief Operating Officer at the National Immigrant Justice Center and as Deputy Director at Lawndale Christian Legal Center. She received her B.A. in Sociology from Wheaton College. Danae is a Korean adoptee who grew up in Michigan, and she has been active with Korean Adoptees of Chicago (KAtCH) and the broader Korean adoptee community since 2008. She is a former KAtCH board member and a current Advisory Board member. Beginning in 2020, she has also been an active member of the all-women’s, multigenerational Korean percussion pungmul group Woori Sori (Our Voice).

Inhe leaves the organization after eight years of dedicated service. Inhe was the pivotal visionary behind the creation of HANA, which means “one” in Korean, a place that merges social services and advocacy for social change for immigrants under one roof. HANA serves over 16,000 community members annually through immigration and legal services, community education, housing services, workforce empowerment, mental health supports, and senior services and public benefits. With coalition allies, HANA is making Chicago and Illinois a better place for immigrants, people of color, low-income people, parents, young and older people, women, queers, and more. HANA won the Welcoming City Ordinance and the Trust Act to keep ICE out of Chicago and Illinois and won historic systemic changes including healthcare for undocumented immigrants, in-state scholarships for undocumented students, and one driver's license for all so undocumented immigrants will no longer be left vulnerable with a different colored license. HANA also won the TEAACH Act to mandate that all IL K-12 public schools teach a unit of Asian American studies. 

Most recently, Inhe led HANA in completing a strategic planning process that determined the organization’s direction over the next five years to prioritize growing grassroots community power; strengthening program alignment; and becoming a stronger and more sustainable organization.

하나센터 이사회는 엄정하고 신중한 과정을 거쳐 다내 코백 님을 차기 사무총장으로 인선하였음을 기쁜 마음으로 발표합니다. 지난 4년간 하나센터의 사무부총장으로서 다내 님은 이미 하나센터의 전략적 비전을 구체화하고 운영 및 프로그램을 감독하는 중추적인 역할을 수행했습니다. 그녀의 취임일은 2024년 9월 30일이며, 최인혜 현 사무총장은 2024년 12월 31일까지 상임고문을 맡게 됩니다.

다내 님은 비영리 기관 운영 및 사업 분야에서 18년 이상의 경험을 쌓았으며, 하나센터에 합류하기 전에는 전국이민자정의센터의 최고운영책임자로 재직했고 런데일기독법률센터의 부소장으로 근무했습니다. 그녀는 위튼 칼리지에서 사회학 학사 학위를 받았습니다. 다내 님은 미시간에서 자란 한인 입양인으로서 2008년부터 시카고한인입양인협회(KAtCH, 캣취)를 포함하여 범 한인 입양인 커뮤니티에서 폭넓게 활동했습니다. KAtCH의 전직 이사이며 현재는 자문이사로 봉사하고 있습니다. 또한 2020년부터 전원 여성으로 구성된 다세대 한인 풍물패 우리소리의 단원으로 적극적인 활동을 하고 있습니다.

토마스 김 하나센터 이사장은 "아무도 최인혜 사무총장의 자리를 같은 방식으로 채울 수는 없겠지만 다내 님이 하나센터를 다음 단계의 성장으로 이끌게 되어 매우 기쁩니다"라고 말했습니다. "하나센터의 야심찬 5개년 전략 계획은 앞으로 우리의 영향력을 확대할 것을 요구하고 있습니다. 다내 님은 우리를 그곳으로 인도할 수 있는 방법, 용기, 경험을 갖추고 있고, 이사회의 전폭적인 신뢰와 지지를 받고 있습니다"라고 말했습니다.

 최인혜 님은 8년간의 헌신적인 봉사를 마치고 기관을 떠납니다. 그녀는 한국어로 "하나"를 의미하는 하나센터를 설립하는 데 중추적인 선각자였습니다. 하나센터는 이민자를 위한 사회 복지와 사회 변화를 위한 옹�� 활동이 한 지붕 밑에서 만나는 곳입니다. 하나센터는 이민 및 법률 상담, 지역사회 교육, 주거 상담, 인력 개발, 정신 건강 지원, 노인 복지 및 공공 혜택 등을 통해 연간 16,000명 이상의 지역사회 구성원을 돕고 있습니다. 협력기관과 연대하여 하나센터는 시카고와 일리노이를 이민자, 유색인종, 저소득층, 부모, 청소년 및 노인, 여성, 성소수자 등 모두에게 더 살기 좋은 곳으로 만들고 있습니다. 하나센터는 이민 및 세관 집행관들이 시카고와 일리노이에 접근하지 못하게 하는 환영 도시 조례와 신뢰법을 통과시켰고, 서류미비 이민자를 위한 의료 혜택, 서류미비 이민자 학생을 위한 일리노이 주내 장학금, 그리고 모든 사람에게 한 종류의 운전면허증이 발급되어 서류미비 이민자의 신분이 다른 색깔의 면허증으로 인해 노출되지 않도록 하는 등 여러 역사적이고 제도적인 승리를 이끌어 냈습니다. 그리고 하나센터는 유치원에서 고등학교까지 모든 일리노이 공립학교에서 적어도 한 단원의 아시안 아메리칸 관련 학습을 가르치도록 하는 역사적인 동양인이민사교육법(TEAACH Act)을 통과시켰습니다. 

가장 최근에 최 사무총장은 하나센터의 전략 계획 수립을 이끌었습니다. 앞으로 5년간 하나센터의 나아갈 방향을 설정했는데, 그 우선 순위는 풀뿌리 지역사회의 힘(민력)을 키우고, 프로그램의 정렬을 확고히 하며, 더 강력하고 지속 가능한 조직으로 성장하는 것입니다.
