Nearly a year after Barbie took over the world, the film's leading lady remains one of Hollywood's most talented stars. Now, it seems Margot Robbie is entering a whole new chapter: her mum era.

Multiple sources have confirmed to PEOPLE that Margot is expecting her first child with her husband, Tom Ackerley. Margot, 34, has been married to producer Tom, also 34, since 2016. The couple met in 2013 on the set of World War II drama Suite Francaise, where Tom was an assistant director.

The couple - who set up production company LuckyChap together - were spotted in Lake Como earlier this month, celebrating Margot's birthday. As rumours swirled that the pair are expecting their first child, neither Margot not Tom have confirmed or denied the news.

The notoriously private couple often go to great lengths to keep their relationship out of the spotlight - and no doubt will choose to keep this new milestone of their life equally under wraps.

However, that doesn't mean Margot hasn't opened up about what motherhood would mean to her. Here's everything Margot Robbie has said about parenthood over the years.

On where she'll raise her children

While the couple currently live in America, a Robbie-Ackerley baby could mean a move back to Margot's native Australia. The Oscar-nominated star has opened up in the past about where she hopes to settle down, previously revealing, 'The kids will be in Australia.'

The star grew up in Gold Coast, a city on the southeastern coast of Queensland, Australia. Opening up during a recent interview last year about her upbringing down under, Margot said she loved spending her time outdoors - describing herself as a 'roll-around-in-the-mud kind of gal.'

On the pressure of having children

While Margot and Tom's rumoured baby joy no doubt deserves major congrats, the star has been outspoken in the past about the pressures women face when it comes to 'social contracts.'

Opening up about the subject in the context of her role as Queen Elizabeth I in Mary Queen of Scots, Margot said, 'I got married, and the first question in almost every interview is, 'Babies? When are you having one?"'

'I'm so angry that there's this social contract. You're married, now have a baby. Don't presume. I'll do what I'm going to do.'

Her co-star Saoirse Ronan chimed in, agreeing, 'Only women get asked that when they get married. Men don't.'

Margot also opened up about how research into Queen Elizabeth I's life - who was pressured into having children - left her 'angry.' 'How dare some old guy dictate what I can and can't do when it comes to motherhood or my own body,' she said.

On taking her time

When it comes to children, Margot and Tom have admitted that they felt no pressure to adhere to society's often imposing timeline. Having married nearly a decade ago, Margot has been candid that the couple were in no rush to have children.

Opening up in 2018, Margot explained that babies weren't a top priority for she and Tom - with other 'babies' on their mind. Margot laughed, 'Three days ago, my husband stopped by a dog shelter on the way back from the airport, and we now have a pit-bull puppy.'

'We already have a two-year-old [dog] who still acts like a puppy. I love him but he's a handful, and for the last three days I haven't slept. I'm like, 'We're fostering her for the week,' and my husband's saying, 'No! We're keeping her.'

'And I'm saying, "We absolutely cannot and if anything, you are now cementing in my mind that we cannot have kids. I can't cope with two puppies, let alone children!"'

On putting her children first

Margot has previously insisted that she'd only have a baby when she feels ready -admitting that she doesn't want her family to suffer because of her demanding career.

She explained, 'I know that once I have kids, they'll be my priority, so I want to do the family thing later.'

Given the demands of press tours and filming, it's no surprise that Margot has been taking some time out. Back in January, she revealed that she was taking a short break from acting to focus on producing instead, joking 'everyone is probably sick' of the sight of her after last summer's Barbiemania.

On her hopes for a large family.

The star has been open about her hopes to one day become a mum - and if plans stay the same, it seems the couple are hoping their family plans include more than one baby.

'If I'm looking into my future 30 years from now, I want to see a big Christmas dinner with tons of kids there,' Margot previously said.

And a big family has been on Margot's mind for a while. In 2016, she shared, 'I want tons of children! Well, maybe not too many. I grew up in a family of four [kids], so that sounds like a good number.'
