Amtrak and NJ Transit commuters faced major delays in and out of Manhattan’s Penn Station on Tuesday due to overhead wire issues and a disabled train at the station, according to the two rail services.

Around 11 a.m., NJ Transit said on X that rail service to and from Penn Station was operating with up to 60-minute delays and Midtown Direct trains were being diverted to Hoboken. Tickets were being cross-honored by NJ Transit and private carrier buses as well as the PATH train at different stops in the area.

“NJT & Amtrak are working together to resolve the issue & determine the root cause,” NJ Transit said in an advisory on its website.

Amtrak said also as of around 11 a.m. on X that customers could expect up to 20- to 40-minute delays in the New York area.

In an email to Gothamist, NJ Transit spokesperson Jim Smith said customers could visit the agency’s website for alternate service information.

Beth Toll, a spokesperson for Amtrak, said the disabled train affected overhead wires but crews worked quickly to resolve the issue.
