Elizabeth has spent the past five years running from her father; her father's huntsman, Caius, has spent the past five years pursuing her. Book info: I am the author of the Iron Seas steampunk romance series. I've written a guide to the world (including a map) on my website.

I also write a paranormal romance series, the Guardians. That series guide is also on my website, including a "The Story So Far" feature, which allows you to catch up on all of the books that previously released in the series if you start after the first installment.

Goodreads info: I am slowly, slowly adding to my shelves and reviews. It's unlikely that I will join many book discussions (especially of my own work) simply because I don't want to stifle reader conversation.

Bio: Meljean was raised in the middle of the woods, and hid under her blankets at night with fairy tales, comic books, and romances. She left the forest and went on a misguided tour through the world of accounting before focusing on her first loves, reading and writing–and she realized that monsters, superheroes, and happily-ever-afters are easily found between the covers, as well as under them, so she set out to make her own.

Meljean lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.

Steampunk novella that wasn't difficult to follow even though I haven't read any other books in the series. I felt a little short-changed in character development, however. Perhaps the longer novels will be more to my liking.

If you enjoy romance with substance then this Iron Seas world is a must read. I know not everyone enjoys steampunk but this passionate and exciting foray simply never fails to entertain.
This short story which was apparently previously included in the Fire and Frost anthology connects with the Kraken King. It features Elizabeth who has been evading her fathers henchmen for five years and trust me she has a really good reason for staying away ! Elizabeth was captured two years ago by Caius but whilst escaping him plunged to her death ( or so Caius thought !) . Quite by chance he catches up with her but hot on the trail is Elizabeth's father. Trapped on an airship during a snow storm the couple start to let down their barriers but can Elizabeth really trust Caius ?
As this is short I'd hate to give away too much but can say that I really liked this pairing as they both deserve happiness. I had so much empathy for the gutsy Elizabeth but the depth of feelings that Caius shared was absolutely mind blowing. That is one very passionate guy which means Elizabeth is a very lucky lady ! Alas though they do have issues to overcome and there are moments of real danger and action. Perhaps after everything the ending felt a little rushed and trite but who am I to criticise a happy ending ? As usual this author excels at what she does and I cannot recommend this series highly enough.

I liked this novella, but I think it would work better as a full-length novel. I wanted more worldbuilding, more information on how the relationships became what they were, and more of the story told in present time rather than as memories/flashbacks. But I tend to like storylines where the love interests hate each other because they like each other. So rational, I know, but I like it anyway. Brook is a good writer and I'd like to read more from her.

Note: Yes, Caius, we get it. Elizabeth is here, and alive. Sheesh.

This was a quick and great read. I love the Steampunk aspect to this series. Ms. Brooks does a bang up job incorporating the Steampunk parts. This is not your - check the list to make it feel like steampunk story.

The conflict in this story is well done. The suspense and anticipation to figure out why Elizabeth is so afraid of her father is just right. I like the tension. I had several guesses and whilst I wasn't dead on, I was warm. It was a bit disturbing and I liked how the story resolved. I liked Elizabeth's reunion with Cassius and her father. This is a slightly dark theme with a lovely happily ever after.

If you want to dip your toes into the world of the Iron Seas, but you’re not ready to commit to a full length novel, this might be a good chance to get your feet wet. You won’t get the depth and full experience of the novels, but it is enough to give you a feel for the setting and tone. This story is a complete standalone and can be read at any point in the series.

The novella follows Elizabeth, who is on the run from her father. One of his men, Caius, caught up to her once before and she doesn’t plan to let it happen again. What she doesn’t realize is, Caius no longer works for her father. Now, he is actually trying to help her stay one step ahead of the goons on her tail. He’ll do anything to keep her free, even if it means she’ll never know how much he loves her.

I don’t want to give too much away, because this is a novella and there are some pretty interesting twists in a short time. Elizabeth has a very good reason for running, one that made me sit up and pay attention. It made her very sympathetic. But it was Caius who stole the show. I loved how he loved Elizabeth and regretted how he had once treated her. And the sexual tension is great. My favorite part about the book, though, was how the two of them made their way toward each other, never believing that other could feel the same.

It’s not perfect. It felt like things wrapped up rather quickly. It did well to invest me in this romance, but then after all the build, everything resolved a little too neatly. I liked it overall, though, and it reminded me of how much I enjoy this world and Meljean’s writing.

I hope there are more Iron Seas stories to come.

I absolutely LOVE the "I've loved you forever" storyline- some of my favorite authors have nailed the perfect mix of heartstopping passion and angst.

This one falls short, putting little snippets of back story would've done wonders.

I acquired this one about four years back as a freebie even though I hadn't read the earlier books and novellas in the series thinking I would get to them eventually. Took me a while to get around to it and yet here I am reading Wrecked in series order.

Technically, Wrecked is a standalone in the Iron Seas steampunk series, but it spends a minute amount of time on the Iron Seas world before it launches into the short and swift story. So... not a good place to jump in really, but I suppose it would make for a rousing good steampunk adventure introduction to the author's writing which it was meant to do as originally being part of an anthology.

Wrecked takes up the story of Elizabeth who has spent the last five years fleeing her father's hunters who will take her back home. One hunter, Caius, was more doggedly persistent and now he's found her again. Only, this time, he claims the hunt is to protect her rather than take her back.

There is further unexpected danger and the filling in of an unexpected backstory. There wasn't a ton of development as this one is around a hundred pages , but there was enough for a romance, gritty adventure, and some spicy good times in the bedroom.

This was a good interlude in the larger series, but now its onward toward the finally two entries and I suspect I'll drag it out since I really love the series.

Elizabeth is a woman on the run from her father. Caius is a man who is indentured to her father. Or is he? When she comes home one day after three years of running, she finds two people standing outside of her boarding house. Who are they? What do they want? Where does she go to watch them? What did she have peace of mind to say to her landlady? So where do the two go when a third person joins them? What does Elizabeth then do? What about her things like clothes and such? Elizabeth's father is an inventor. What does he invent? Why does it hurt Elizabeth so much? What was Elizabeth created for? Who is Caius's daughter? What is she? What is going on in the world around them? Why do they, Elizabeth and Caius, avoid most places when they finally meet up again? How do things go between the two of them? When Elizabeth's father starts following them in his airship, and that ship rams the one Caius and Elizabeth are on, what happens? Where do they take sanctuary at if they can indeed get away? What do they find in the morning? Where do they go after that? What happens before they go? You're going to have to read this book and find out. It took me a bit to get into it, only because I don't normally read something like this, but once I started, I could not put it down and it went faster than I could ever have imagined. Not sure if I will read more steampunk themed books, but this was enjoyable.

*thar she spoilers!*

Wrecked is #3.5 in the Iron Seas series by Meljean Brook. I've only read the first full length in this series and now two novellas. Strangely, I do have book 2(?) at home waiting to be read.

So. Wrecked. The Iron Seas series is sorta...Steampunk Fantasy Action Romance. Yes. That. lol! It's a good series but due to the numerous categories it fits in, there is a lot going on - even in the novellas.

In Wrecked the hero and heroine are being chased by the heroine's insane father. There are steamships and zombies to deal with as well. It's a very quick but fun little adventure.

I really, really like Ms Brook's writing in this series but goodness! She does not mind delving into the squicky. The biggest issue I had with the plot of Wrecked is that the heroine is running from her father because he wants to make her over into his [deceased] wife (her mother). That is just...so many different levels of gross I don't know what to say. I eventually did a bit of skimming to get to the ending because of that.

As I read more of this series, it makes me glad I didn't give up completely after reading The Iron Duke . I do think I'm working my way up to reading that full length I have at home. ;-)

“Wrecked” by Meljean Brook takes the reader into a world where steampunk is real but beware of the zombies! Transported to steampunk Europe and England, we get the story of Elizabeth and Cauis. She has been on the run for years from her father. He is the man tasked with hunting her down and taking her home. Elizabeth’s father owns an animal sanctuary in the New World and Cauis has been a servant there since he was young. Elizabeth always though Cauis hated her, since they were never really friends. Elizabeth finds out some horrible information and leaves the country. Circumstances change over the years she has been running so when she sees Cauis again, she is naturally on edge and tries to get away from him. He tries to explain that he is only there to help her escape her father, who is very close behind them. Cauis must show her how he really feels about her to help her, and in turn himself, escape her father and the zombies that are never too far away.
This is such a unique novella! I have never read anything like it and I thoroughly enjoyed all of it! Between the interesting steampunk angle and the zombie twist, you can’t go wrong! I only wish it were longer so I could dive deeper into the story. Thankfully, Meljean Brook has many other novellas and novels surrounding this world, so I can’t wait to get started! I give “Wrecked” five stars!!

This was a fun Iron Seas novella. I enjoyed visiting this wonderful world again. This could be read as a stand alone to introduce readers to the Iron Seas world.

I enjoyed Elizabeth and Caius as characters, they had good chemistry and were fun to read about.

This book dealt more with the zombie aspects of the Iron Sea world, although there was also a lot of airship travel as well. The second half has some action and all of it is well written with lots of witty banter.

Although this book doesn’t deal with the core set of Iron Seas characters (at least I don’t think it does, I don’t remember Elizabeth from the main series). It does mention characters from the main series, for example the airship that Lady Corsair runs.

Things are tied up pretty quickly and I felt like the ending was a bit rushed. However, I do understand that this is a novella and so it has to be short.

Overall this was a fun little addition to the Iron Seas series. I enjoyed the characters and absolutely adore this world. I would recommend to those who want to take a quick look at the Iron Seas world or to long time fans of the series. This is a wonderful steampunk romance that has very solid world-building.

I read this in the anthology it was originally published in, but I think I might actually buy it, too. I wish I could print it out.. I really love the cover and the fact that she put the anthology cover in the corner.

As for the content, obviously Meljean can do me no wrong. I think I could throw my least favourite tropes at her and she'd make me love them. Though, I'll admit, there were no tropes in this one that I didn't like to begin with. Creepy (I accidently wrote crappy, yo, Freud?) relatives and stuff are kind of my thaaang.

(I also have to stop writing reviews/comments while listening to the KNB soundtrack, because it gets weird.)

Anyways, definitely recommend anything she writes.

I've thoroughly enjoyed every story I've read set in the Iron Seas world, and this one was no exception. Elizabeth is on the run from her father, and Caius is a hunter sent by her father to retrieve her. He caught up to her once before, which didn't go so well for him, but this time things are different and he just wants to help her. Elizabeth and Caius are in for an adventure complete with hunters and their dogs, airships and zombies, and I enjoyed it immensely. There are a few fun twists to the story which make things interesting, ending with a very satisfying conclusion. I look forward to reading more stories in this series, they never disappoint.

I read this as part of the Fire & Frost anthology...

Wrecked by Meljean Brook - Set in the Iron Seas world, Elizabeth, who has been on the run from her father (for a very good reason), and hunter Caius, who was supposed to bring her back but failed before, are sweet together and there is a good enough set up for the past history between them to make that part of the story work. The resolution to the main conflict of the story is a bit quick, but that's not really a problem just a nit and just my greedy nature speaking - I always want more of this world.

It's been a while since I've spent time in the world of the Iron Seas by Meljean Brook. I'm not generally a steampunk fan, but I really enjoyed the Iron Duke, so I was happy to head back into the world it's set in.

(Plus, this was also 'the oldest unread book in my Kindle library' for this month, so I either had to read it or accept that I'm never going to, bite the bullet and just delete it and move on. Apparently, I bought a little over 7 years ago.)

And the verdict? It was an enjoyable evening's read, but not as much fun as I remember the Iron Duke being. I like Elizabeth as a character, but I wasn't a fan of Cassius - and the fact that (from her perspective) he'd spent their entire life together insulting her before suddenly telling her loved her felt... too much of an about-face to deal with in the space of a novella. It also played uncomfortably into the damaging narrative that we desperately need to stop teaching young girls: 'He's only cruel to you because he likes you'.

And yes, I know that Cassius in the book had his reasons, and we understand them from his perspective. I still stand by my discomfort though.

That plus the zombies - which, yes, I know are a feature of the Iron Seas world, but that doesn't mean I have to enjoy them - mean this isn't a 5-star read for me. It was still pretty good though, so I've gone with a low 4-star as my rating.

This novella, set in the Iron Seas universe, was originally published in the Fire & Frost anthology. Elizabeth escaped from her father several years ago and has been evading the people he's sent after her ever since. One of them is Caius. Caius actually captured her at one point, but she escaped, and in a way that made him believe she'd fallen to her death. Now they have met again.

This is a short one, but it packs a punch. Elizabeth and Caius have had many years to develop feelings for each other, but have had to suppress them. When they finally don't have to, it's very, very satisfying. Caius' regrets about the past and the way he reacts when he realises Elizabeth is still alive were lovely. Also, the protagonists' long history made the novella work perfectly, since we didn't have to believe they'd fallen madly in love in a few hours. Add the intrigue about why exactly Elizabeth had needed to escape from her father, plus some danger (daddy dearest hasn't given up on getting her back, of course), and this made for a very exciting story.

MY GRADE: A B+.

I always lament that I haven't caught up entirely on this series when I read one of these stories and/or books. I MUST REMEDY THIS. Because zombies mixed with scary nanites mixed with AWESOME characters make me all weak in the knees. And the worldbuilding... *swoon* There's just SO MUCH going on in this world that it's VERY easy to get sucked into it. Which is fantastic.

This story packs a wallop. No joke. It gives you a fairly pointed overview of the zombie badness while keeping you engaged with the characters and their issues. Those issues, by the by, aren't little. Elizabeth and Caius are dealing with a morally reprehensible plot, matters of trust, and being brave enough to bare their souls to one another and admit that *maybe* there might be something more than dislike between them. Something like HAWT SEX. Steampunk sexiness... *heart eyes*

I have been wanting to read this book for a while and while I am glad to get it off my TBR, it was not my favorite by her. I did like the Caius was trying to save her this time, but parts of it were kind of unbelievable. Still I liked the story over all was good.

Fantastic foray her steampunk world

Ms. Brook's storytelling is top-notch. Relatable characters that have depth along with engaging plots, action, and romance make for winning combos every time. Her combination of narrative and descriptive details can keep a seasoned reader charmed. It's always a pleasure to be saved from the mind-numbing drivel of sappy, superficial romances. Thank you, Ms. Brooks, not just for my sanity, but mostly for the exciting people and world you created.

I really REALLY would have liked for this book to be longer, as to see more of the characters. The adventure aspect was suuuper short, I think it had so much more to tell and to do, as it is.
But I really liked this book, one of the shortest stories, but it had all the markings of an Iron Sea tale, and it could have been an entire book.

Still, even if it was short I thought again it was going in one direction and NOPE it didnt. Some amazing scenes.

I have about 0% recollection of this story, so I will not sway opinion either way but I have enjoyed the rest of the stories in the series and the world that they live in.

Since writing that line I have read some reviews of people who post helpful reviews and recall that this was pretty decent and I stand by what I said above.
