Kate Alice Marshall I decided to become a writer before I actually could write, mostly because I wanted to be just like my mom. We were a very book-centric family, and did family reading and told stories around the dinner table every night from a very early age, and I couldn't imagine making my life about anything else. I started getting serious about publication when I was a teenager, submitting short stories and writing my first novel in the back of class instead of paying attention (not recommended). I didn't start having much success, though, until I was in my 20s, which I credit in part to starting to read more widely and critically, and experiment with new forms and genres. The most valuable thing I did was keep pushing myself and to always be working on a new thing, so I didn't get stuck on any one failure.

There's so much more to say, of course, but I hope that helps!

Kate Alice Marshall Daphne is a very fun and challenging character to write. For Daphne, I think her story is done--she exists in a particular context and conflict, and her story (or my part in it) is concluded. I generally don't like to pick characters back up once I've gotten them where I think they ought to be. But I would love to write a character who is like Daphne as the primary perspective in a novel--someone with a very strong and unusual point of view on the world, and a unique way of going about her goals, shall we say.
Kate Alice Marshall I'm afraid I don't know the publisher's plans on that front!
