About the Office of Global Engagement

The Office of Global Engagement (OGE) at the University of Georgia seeks to expand the global reach of our institution’s instructional, research, and service missions, preparing the university and the state for thoughtful and effective participation and leadership in the interconnected world of the twenty-first century.

With a focus on customer service, and a commitment to diversity and collaborative partnerships, OGE promotes and supports a broad array of interdisciplinary initiatives and experiential learning opportunities designed to improve the global understanding of students, faculty and staff. In keeping with UGA’s mission, OGE is committed to highlighting the critical importance of internationalized curricula and engagement in an increasingly diverse and interdependent global society.

Associate Provost, Office of Global Engagement

Dr. Martin Kagel

As Associate Provost for Global Engagement, Martin Kagel oversees UGA’s Global Education efforts, the university’s residential centers in Oxford and Cortona, the offices for Immigration Services and International Initiatives/Partnerships, and the Intensive English Program.

Prior to leading the Office of Global Engagement, Kagel served for close to six years as Associate Dean in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences where he managed the College’s international portfolio and was the primary liaison to nine departments and three interdisciplinary institutes. From 2006 to 2016, he was head of the Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies.

Dr. Kagel holds the A.G. Steer Professorship and is the author, editor, or co-editor of six books, as well as three book-length special journal issues. He has published over 60 journal articles, book chapters, and other scholarly works. His teaching honors include the Sandy Beaver Award for Excellence in Teaching as well as the Richard B. Russell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Kagel earned a Ph.D. in German from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also holds a master’s degree in German and theatre studies from the Free University of Berlin.
