About Vaporwave
Vaporwave is (more or less) a meme genre within electronic music. Artists sample and manipulate music tracks–often from the 80’s and 90’s–by applying a myriad of effects to them, including reverb, slowed tempos, and chop-and-screw. Widely inspired by Macintosh Plus' (a.k.a. Vektroid) 2011 album Floral Shoppe, vaporwave often attempts to invoke nostalgia and absurdity with its outlandish visuals and psychedelia. Retro 90’s aesthetic (or “aesthetic,” as it’s often stylized) is prevalent, as well as cyberpunk and other internet imagery.
