About Post-Punk
The imaginatively-named Post-Punk is a movement and genre that rose to prominence – um – post punk. Since punk rock was a generally quite limited genre, usually made up of a very simple guitar-bass-drums setup, post-punk, like the simultaneous new wave movement, sought to do away with these limitations, introducing new sounds, instruments and more interesting lyrical concepts.
While new wave was much more commercial, post-punk music was often more obscure and arty. It took the drive and aggression of its parent genre and infused elements of other genres such as jazz, funk, psychedelia and krautrock, giving birth to subgenres such as dance-punk and gothic rock. Post-punk and its various derivatives (including new wave) had an influence on the like of shoegaze, dark wave and the post-punk revival.
