Petty Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I tried to write a song about you, to take you down
But you know where I am is what you hate about me now
I've heard the things you've said, calling yourself my ex-boyfriend
To anyone who would listen, so what's this about?

[Hook]
'Cause you used to call me pretty 'til you took out the 'R'
Said "girl, you couldn't be more petty than you already are"

Are you mad 'cause I wrote songs about you breakin' my heart?
'Cause boy you used to call me pretty 'til you took out the 'R'

[Post-Hook]
I'm singin' like
I'm singin' like

[Verse 2]
Thought we were cool until I saw you take me off your phone
It's been so long, you've still not moved out of your parents' home
Don't wanna see me now, but you're so happy goin' 'round
Recallin' how we screwed around, now you're all on your own

[Hook]
'Cause you used to call me pretty 'til you took out the 'R'
(You used to call me pretty 'til you)
Said "girl you couldn't be more petty than you already are"
(Couldn't be more petty)

Are you mad 'cause I wrote songs about you breakin' my heart?
(Mad 'cause I wrote songs about you?)
'Cause boy you used to call me pretty 'til you took out the 'R'
(Used to call me pretty)

[Post-Hook]
I'm singin' like
I'm singin' like

[Verse 3]
I said, baby, you're welcome, for the press shots and the parties
That my name will get you into when I play this song about you
And you know that I don't hate you, though I've got reason to
'Cause boy I miss your mother's dinners more than I miss you!

[Outro]
I'm singin' like
I'm singin' like

Genius Annotation

Emma Blackery makes a musical nodd to Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” while discussing the breakup with her first love on “Petty,” the seventh track from her debut album Villains. The album was released on August 31, 2018.

Blackery teased the song four days in advance via Instagram saying:

despite the fact my first love told his friends that i was “the rebound that went wrong” when we broke up, despite him standing there doing nothing when his friends verbally abused me at college, despite him later turning around to my friends at parties introducing himself as my ex-boyfriend when i’d found some success… i laid it all to rest. i forgave him, truly. a few hurtful actions do not define someone’s whole truth. and then i found out last year that he blocked me on instagram. that’s just a step too far, sir.

On the back of the album’s vinyl-artwork, the track list has little messages explaining what each song is directed towards. This song is: ‘For The Big Mouth.’
