“Escape from Midwich Valley” was originally featured in the debut EP I, circa 2012, later reappearing in 2015’s Trilogy – in itself, a mere compilation of the three previous extended plays released between 2012 and 2015. The song, as the author himself, had a notorious increase in popularity after being featured in an early 2014 trailer for the second installment of the Hotline Miami electronic game series.

The track itself sounds rather dark and eerie, perfectly showcasing the ways in which Carpenter Brut is invokes atmospheric imagery through the heavy use of synthesizers. Although the artist himself doesn’t seem to strive for any particular scene, his music is commonly referred as a rising sub-genre known as dark synthwave; having caught the attention of a relatively small yet very passionate fan base over the last few years.

In any case, the influence of H.P Lovecraft’s work, namely The Shadow Over Innsmouth, is rather obvious in the official short film made for the track, released in late 2015. The fictional small port town of Innsmouth, a popular part of the Chtulu mythos, is even directly referenced on a sign at the beginning sequence.

The French musician once stated in an interview:

When I’m fed up with Carpenter Brut, I will probably score more OST, I’ve always loved doing that.

Such love is undoubtedly evident throughout his work, where music is often driven by an established main theme. The structure of this song, in particular, highly resembles that of a well paced motion picture. It really doesn’t take much other than a vivid imagination to let the horrific events unfold in your mind as the music dictates their rhythm.

The song presents a large variety of samples, including an intro from Hector Berlioz' “Songe D'une Nuit De Sabbat”, an audio track from John Carpenter’s Prince Of Darkness and even an outro sequence straight out of Boy Meets Dog, a 1939 cartoon by Walter Lantz.
