In April, Seattle was named as a finalist for the prestigious All-America City Award. Over a weekend in early June, a group of leaders from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (DON) traveled to Denver for the 75th annual All-America City Award Event to show how Seattle exemplifies the power of civic participation and innovation to a jury of nationally recognized civic leaders. And they brought home the prize!
The team showcased three DON programs – the Community Liaisons Program, Indigenous Advisory Council, and People’s Academy for Community Engagement – to demonstrate how the City of Seattle puts relationship building and community involvement at the center of our civic engagement.
This year, Seattle was one of ten exemplary communities recognized for their transformative, community-driven efforts to strengthen democracy through local action and innovation. Recipients are recognized for the strength of their civic infrastructure—the network of relationships, partnerships, and capacities driving effective decision-making and problem-solving.
The All-America City Award shines a spotlight on the incredible work taking place in communities across the country. By celebrating the best in local innovation, civic engagement and cross-sector collaboration, the All-America City Award remind us of the potential within every community to tackle tough issues and create real change.
