Last week, XPRIZE announced the 20 finalist teams selected to compete in the last stage of the XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition. This initiative, funded by Elon Musk and the Musk Foundation, features a $100 mil prize purse. The Grand Prize Winner will receive $50 mil, with up to $30 mil distributed among three runners-up. These finalists were chosen from over 1,300 teams spanning 88 countries across four tracks: air, ocean, land , and rocks. I am particularly excited to see several ocean startups among the finalists 🌊 , showcasing their potential to pioneer novel CDR methods focused on rebalancing our ecosystems by extracting CO2 directly from the oceans. Here are some notable ocean track finalists: Captura HQ (Location: US, Demo Location: US): Offering a scalable, low-cost Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) carbon removal solution. Ebb Carbon HQ (Location: US, Demo Location: US): Innovating a carbon removal solution by enhancing the ocean's natural ability to store CO2 safely through their electrochemical ocean alkalinity enhancement method. Kelp Blue HQ (Location: Netherlands, Demo Location: Namibia): Cultivating giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) in farms off the coasts of Namibia, New Zealand, and soon Alaska, utilizing innovative submerged structures to overcome scaling limits in sheltered waters, benefiting from local nutrient upwelling systems. Planetary HQ (Location: Canada, Demo Location: Canada): Leveraging ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) to amplify the ocean's natural carbon removal capabilities. These innovative approaches show great promise in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable practices. Congrats on their achievements!

Excited to share that Mati Carbon has made it to the Top 20 finalists — selected from more than 1,300 teams across 88 countries over 3 years of assessment — in the last stage of #XPRIZECarbonRemoval competition, with a grand prize of $50mn to be awarded to the winners in 2025! 🌍 In only 2024, Mati is on track to deliver more than $1mn in increased income for the smallholder and marginal farmers earning less than $4-$10/day in the Global South (via ~20-30% boosted crop yields and pesticide reduction). Mati aims to touch 50,000 farmers just by 2025, with several corporate buyers from the @Frontier, Milkywire etc program secured already, with initial CDR tons delivered as well (Stripe, Shopify, H&M, Klarna, Spotify etc); 🌍 The above #SDG1 developmental impact is besides the strengthened climate adaptation and resilience (#A&R) impact for the small farmers — enabled via 'regenerative' impact on the soil itself of ERW (enhanced health, fertility and water retention). High integrity engineered carbon removals (#CDRs) via EWR trading at >$300/ton price can play a pivotal role towards the ~$300bn annual adaptation finance gap in the Global South. Ebb Carbon is an XPRIZE finalist! As one of 20 finalists announced today in the carbon removal space, we’re working toward the $50 million grand prize that will be awarded in 2025. This is a great recognition of the incredible progress we’ve made in a short period of time to advance our marine carbon dioxide removal system. To be named a finalist, we had to meet a number of key milestones, including displaying operational maturity towards removing 1,000 tons of CO2 this year, and a viable pathway to reaching megatonne scale in the coming years. Over the next year, judges from the XPRIZE Committee will conduct verification visits at operational sites of all of the finalists, including Ebb. In order to meet the International Energy Assocation’s target of net zero emissions by 2050, we need to annually capture and store 1.2 gigatonnes of CO2 by 2030. This is roughly equivalent to the weight of 240 million adult African elephants. The world currently captures 50 million tonnes a year - 4% of the 2030 requirement. Even with dramatically increased investment in planned new projects, we will be lucky to get to 40% of the required number by 2030. The XPRIZE Carbon Capture competition, with a prize purse of $100m, has seen a number of credible new technologies that have the potential to scale annual capture to gigatonne level. The competition has had a dramatic impact on innovation and investment, with some truly remarkable technologies on display, not only amongst the 20 finalists. The second day of E-Waste World Conference & Expo - Battery Recycling Conference & Expo #EBME2024 has concluded. I want to extend my gratitude to the organizers, Ben Horley & November Walker, for inviting me to this exceptional conference. It was a pleasure to give a talk 🎤, listened to Dr. Niklas Niemann, and moderate the panel discussion with experts Paudy O'Brien, Arthur Schmid, Robert Mitchell. It’s remarkable to see the progress industries have made in developing advanced automation and robotic systems 🤖 for disassembling EV batteries 🔋 compared to just a few years ago when the vision for robotic disassembly was still unclear. However, most of these robotic systems developed by the industry are limited to handling only one type of EV battery. This limitation raises a critical question: Should we first develop tailored AI-based robotic manipulation techniques, or is the technology already available, and we just need to implement it? In my opinion, we are still in the research phase. Despite the push from strategies like Net Zero 🌱, we need to be realistic about the current capabilities and future advancements. At REBELION EU PROJECT, we are focused on developing learning-based robotic techniques for EV battery disassembly that can be generalized to different battery models, and also be used for the disassembly of other complex products like wind turbines and electric motors. 🌟 Exciting news 🌟 Two novel grippers from KU Leuven are mounted and ready for integrated testing in RECLAIM's portable robotic Material Recovery Facility (prMRF). 1️⃣ 🔹A High Airflow Vertical Conveying (HAVCO) gripper 2️⃣ 🔹A parallel finger gripper with massive driven soft structures for improved compliance with the objects to be grasped. The ultimate idea behind developing the specialised robotic grippers is to better sort different type of materials, accomplish positive and negative material separation, and significantly increase the “picks per invested euro” rate for the composite robotic system.
