Acrania is one of the most common neural tube defects. Acrania is defined as the absence of the cranial vault above the bony orbits. It can be further divided into two main subtypes depending on the amount of cerebral tissue present, anencephaly and exencephaly. Anencephaly is a type of neural tube defect considered when there are no cerebral hemispheres present, whereas exencephaly denotes a normal amount of cerebral tissue. Nonetheless, the cranium is absent, making this condition fatal. This geometry reduces bronchial path length from the trachea to the periphery and minimizes both dead space volume and resistance to convective airflow.

SpaceBike: Discipline and Motivation The idea of the SpaceBike project was to identify changes in human locomotion due to a prolonged time of inactivity and/or immobilization as it for example occurs during human spaceflight. Or after surgery. Immobilization is going along with severe changes in muscle structure and function but most likely also changes in brain physiology, especially within the motor cortex. What is necessary to maintain locomotor function during deep space exploration in order to guarantee safety and success for space missions? What is necessary to remodulate locomotor function in patients suffer from brain damage to guarantee a self-determined and independent life after brain damage? Our first Data of the BRACE 60-days head down tilt bedrest study @MEDES, present at the #ISGP conference last week in Dubai, show that a regular daily exercise regimen across three weeks already provokes neuromuscular adaptation resulting in a more efficient and smoother movement. This adaptation is supported by the application of artificial gravity, most likely caused by a reduction in intracranial pressure supporting neuroplasticity. Actually, this is not necessarily surprising, but for the first time identifies the time course of neuromodulation: What we need to maintain our functional capacities – on a central as well as on a peripheral level – is discipline and motivation to keep up exercise protocols over a longer time frame.
