🚀 TRAD, Tests & Radiations is co-funding with the CNES the PhD thesis of Gabin Charpentier on Radiation protection for crewed missions to Mars: environmental modelling, multi-layer optimization, prevention of radiation risks for astronauts. Gabin presented at the Committee on Space Research - COSPAR 2024 Scientific Assembly in Busan his simulation work performed with the TRAD 3D simulation tools, FASTRAD® and RayXpert®, as well as GEANT4.   In order to define the Martian radiation environment, the first part of his PhD work was to develop ARAMIS, the Atmospheric RAdiation Model for Ionizing spectra on Martian Surface. ARAMIS shows the best fit with experimental Curiosity measurements for photon and neutron secondary fluxes, while being in very good agreement with other models for other particle species.   With ARAMIS as an input, FASTRAD® and RayXpert® are used to test different multilayer shielding concepts for Martian habitats. The goal is to minimize both primary and secondary radiation, with a particular emphasis on neutrons, in order to reduce the biological impact on astronauts. Calculation parameters include effective dose, risk of exposure-induced death (REID) as well as equivalent dose to various critical organs like skin, Blood Forming Organs (BFOs), gonads and brain and bone surface.   🔬 The work performed in this PhD is part of the development and validation process for the new physics and new outputs that will be available in the next FASTRAD® version in 2025. Designing Moon and Martian habitats to protect astronauts from radiation will be possible! FASTRAD® to the moon and beyond!   ❓ Any questions?   📍Come see Athina Varotsou and Rémi Benacquista at the TRAD booth at NSREC ! Contact us at fastrad@trad.fr and visit www.fastrad.net

📣Fibre Optics are becoming increasingly important in the space and nuclear industries. Their sensitivity to radiation varies based on their use (wavelenght, environment, etc..) and composition.   🛰️Based on our experience, we have recently equipped ourselves to test and characterize optical fibers in radiative environment.   📈Thanks to our optical sources, spectrometers and power meters, we are able to study on-line radiation-induced attenuation (RIA), from 250nm to 2500nm. Depending on your requirements, we can carry out spectral or single-wavelength measurements, as well as testing the radiation resistance of your fibers at various temperatures (from -40°C to 120°C, for example). After irradiation, a recovery often occurs on optical fibers and the losses can sometimes anneal of more than 30%. Off-line radiation tests with optical characterization of your fiber pre- and post-irradiation therefor underestimate the radiation-induced losses. On-line make it possible to study the real impact of radiations on optical fibers without losing any information.   we can help you define and carry out tests on your optical fibers and fibre optic devices.   Let's get in touch !

🛰️Last week we were in Avignon for the 17th Spacecraft Charging and Technology Conference. This conference focuses on the science and technology of spacecraft electric charging in space.   📣We'd like to take this opportunity to thank ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab, CNES and European Space Agency - ESA for organizing the event, and all those who helped make the week a success. The conference took place at the Palais des Papes, an incredible venue, full of history and Gothic architecture, which provided an exceptional setting for the conference.   Jérémie-Marie PLEWA, gave a presentation on "Internal charging analysis of floating metallic parts with FASTRAD", in partnership with Airbus Defence and Space. This presentation was to demonstrate, using two typical industrial applications, how FASTRAD's Internal Charging can treat floating parts. The aim was to compare usual industrial practices with the one using FASTRAD and provide solutions to the space industry.   💻 The past 20 years, FASTRAD® has been recognized in the space industry as the reference software for advance radiation analysis and shielding optimization. All over the world, over 150 satellite integrators, space agencies and sub-system manufacturers are using FASTRAD® on a daily basis. FASTRAD® allows key calculations using ray-tracing and Reverse & Forward Monte Carlo methods.
