Observations from the Black Hat Conference (Day 1). The intensity inside matched the temperature outside (45 degrees!), as some 25,000 people all “met” in Vegas. Some observations from a number of the key sessions / meetings: 💥 Geopolitics and regional conflicts continue to play a significant role in the #cyberthreatlandscape (exacerbating the risk and complexity); 💥 Counterintuitively, some of our macro-concerns cyber risk, including those relating to democratic processes, are being addressed through good old-fashioned manual processes; 💥 The CrowdStrike outage remains a hot topic (as you may expect)…with lessons on #cyberresilience, for corporates and (unfortunately) threat actors; 💥 Third party #supplychain risk remains a very hot topic (especially the #software supply chain - see above). As one presenter put it: “Assume your supply chain is compromised”; 💥 The #threatlandscape ebbs and flows, but our adversaries remain motivated and well-funded. There is some optimism around recent law enforcement successes, despite the sense of whack-a-mole; 💥 A big focus on #corporategovernance at the heart of cyber resilience (recognising the people, process and technology challenges) and the role of our boards; 💥 Skills / capability challenges are not just in relation to cyber professionals, in fact, large companies like Microsoft are just as concerned about data governance expertise; and 💥 There are a LOT of new vendors growing successful businesses in all parts of the cyber security ecosystem with some new (and not so new) suppliers ‘peddling’ hard.
