Is your team's creativity drier than a week-old birthday cake? Fear not! Here's how to get those innovation juices flowing again. First, ditch the stale routine. Plan brainstorming sessions that are more "playtime with pizza" than "powerpoint purgatory." Encourage wild ideas, even the ones that sound like they were hatched by a sleep-deprived hamster. Remember, sometimes the most groundbreaking inventions come from the seemingly absurd!
-
Reigniting a team's passion for innovation involved creating a safe space for brainstorming sessions where no idea was too outlandish, fostering a culture of openness and experimentation. I initiated a "creativity day" once a month, where the team could work on any project of their choice, encouraging them to explore new ideas without the pressure of immediate results. Additionally, I recognized and rewarded creative efforts, no matter the outcome, to reinforce the value of innovation and inspire continuous creative thinking.
-
The first step is to understand why your team feels uninspired. Just like with a car, you can't fix an engine problem without diagnosing it first. Maybe they're stuck on repetitive tasks and crave a challenge. Perhaps they feel their ideas haven't been valued in the past. Talking to them openly and figuring out the root of the issue will help you create solutions that truly reignite their passion for innovation.
-
First, your team may not be lacking motivation at all. You may be part of a work culture or system which judges or does not support creativity. First take a look in the mirror and ask, "how am I contributing to this environment?" After assessing your own impact, then move to rebuild your work culture. One way to support a creativity is to ensure you have a vivid vision for the future. When there is a motivating vision, you are more likely to get buy in and creativity from the team. Second, be sure to ask for novel ideas and implementations. Leave the judgment at home and allow your team to deliver novelty for review.
-
Have 1-on-1 with each of the team members to gauge what's causing lack of motivation.Typically, the issues fall in following categories and your response has to be accordingly matched: 1.Monotonous work:Look at possible re-designing of the work so that everyone has a meaningful unit of work and can get feedback from the users of his output. Reinforce the vision and how their work is helping realize the same. 2.No support for new ideas:Allow members to first express their point of view.Have R&R (money, public recognition etc) for team members. 3.No collaboration:Highlight how collaborative working promotes achievement of the vision and encourage/recognize collaboration. 4.No learning/growth: Provide on-the-job, formal learning and mentoring.

Inspire with a Vision and Clear Goals Set an Inspiring Vision: Future-Oriented: Communicate a compelling vision of the future that inspires the team to think creatively about how to get there. Big Picture: Help the team see how their innovative efforts contribute to the overall goals and success of the organization. Define Clear Goals: SMART Goals: Set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) goals to provide direction and focus for innovative efforts. Innovation Targets: Establish specific targets for innovation, such as a certain number of new ideas per quarter or innovation projects to be developed.
-
Absolutely! Setting a clear vision is like giving your team a roadmap to an exciting destination. Imagine a group planning a hike. Without knowing where they're going (just a generic "explore nature"), excitement wanes. But tell them they're reaching a hidden waterfall, and suddenly everyone's motivated to brainstorm the best route, overcome obstacles, and reach that amazing sight together. A clear vision of the impact your team's innovation can have fuels their creativity and makes the journey itself inspiring.
-
Revitalizing your team's creativity involves fostering an environment where innovation thrives. Align their work with compelling goals that inspire passion and purpose. Encourage a culture of experimentation and learning from failures. Grant autonomy for exploring new ideas and taking risks. Foster collaboration through inclusive brainstorming and idea-sharing sessions. Recognize and celebrate innovative efforts to motivate and reinforce their creative endeavors. Lead with enthusiasm and openness to new approaches, nurturing a culture where creativity flourishes.
-
Setting the vision & how your team contribute to the overall vision are important factors but then start breaking it down with your team to help them see how their individual & collaborative efforts contribute to achieving the vision. Ask them what excites them about the vision & why it's important. Get them involved in designing the strategy & plan for your team to achieve your goals. Communicate clearly & transparently & don't shy away from any difficult conversations. Step into them & use them as a way to model the values of the business. Not everyone has to agree all of the time, this is innovation as much in the process as in the work.
-
I’d offer a counter perspective to this as I don’t personally believe in “empowerment” as a thing we do for others. Awaken agency instead. How? Have the team identify a problem and deconstruct it by awakening their imagination with questions like: 1. How might we solve for X so that it might result in Y? 2. What needs to be true for X to produce that outcome that helps transform Y? 3. What do we believe changes if we address X? Stir their curiosity, awaken their imagination by having them (and yourself) lean into these first principle curiosities to foster trust, deconstruct the elements of risk, and generate impactful experiments to explore.
-
To reignite your team's creativity, cultivate a supportive environment that values innovation. Clarify meaningful goals to inspire their work. Encourage experimentation and risk-taking by celebrating learning opportunities from setbacks. Provide autonomy to explore new ideas and solutions independently. Foster collaboration through diverse perspectives and team brainstorming sessions. Acknowledge and reward innovative contributions to reinforce a culture of creativity. Lead with passion and openness to new possibilities, motivating your team to innovate and excel.
-
Create a Safe and Supportive Environment Encourage Risk-Taking: Psychological Safety: Foster an environment where team members feel safe to express new ideas without fear of criticism or failure. Accept Failures: Emphasize that failure is a part of the innovation process and encourage learning from mistakes. Provide Support: Resources: Ensure your team has access to the resources they need, whether it’s time, tools, or information. Encouragement: Offer encouragement and positive reinforcement when team members propose new ideas.
-
Always make sure you're empowering your team to take initiative and to indulge into their creativity. Perhaps provide them with some free time to explore different ideas, and actively encourage it.
-
If you want people to get creative and think outside the box, empower them to try out new things. Allow them to work different places, use different tools or resources and work with different people. The more diverse the team is, the broader the ideas they generate...

Few things are as motivating as progress. The only thing that beats it is... 🎉 Celebrated progress 🎉 It's remarkable how mediocre (if not outright bad) most companies and teams are at celebrating progress. Especially considering the amount of research that supports the importance of celebrating progress for motivation and habit formation. In a creative environment, celebrating failures are at least as important as wins. Failures are stepping stones towards success. As Thomas Edison put it in relation to the invention of the light bulb: "I haven't failed... I have just found 10.000 ways that didn't work" That's the spirit - and celebrating each of those 10.000 will help to not give up, and keep you going until you make it.
-
Recognize and Reward Innovation Celebrate Successes: Recognition Programs: Implement a recognition program that celebrates innovative ideas and accomplishments. Public Acknowledgment: Acknowledge and celebrate innovative efforts in team meetings, newsletters, or company-wide communications. Reward Creativity: Incentives: Offer incentives such as bonuses, additional time off, or professional development opportunities for successful innovative projects. Non-Monetary Rewards: Use non-monetary rewards like public recognition, opportunities to lead new projects, or special privileges.
-
I’m going to add a counter perspective that supports celebrating wins in the form of reframing wins as FAILs - or in other words: First Attempts In Learning We often think about rewarding the outcome when it comes to innovation but the reality is that it’s so much more about the effort and learnings that goes into trying things that may not have been tried before. Redefine what winning means and celebrate that versus just a positive outcome which could lead to false positives that don’t push your teams thinking in exploring what is truly unknown that results in transformation and innovation. This requires a shift in mindset and courage and confidence to be ok with being wrong just as much as we are ok with being right.
-
A team that brainstormed a new product idea and it became a hit. Recognizing their effort publicly, maybe with a team lunch or bonus, shows their hard work is valued. This positive reinforcement fuels motivation and makes them eager to tackle the next innovative challenge. It's like winning a game - it makes you want to play again and try even harder to win the next one!
-
Change is uncomfortable, so recognition & appreciation are key to reigniting creativity. Do it openly, honestly & most importantly authentically! You can even get them to give appreciation to one another. A great way to recognize & feel appreciation is to go round the room & ask everyone to get involved. Everyone leaves with a warm feeling & connection. It doesn't take long! What do you appreciate about "Sofia"? What is one wish you have for "Sofia"? Note: It is useful to get everyone to write down their thoughts quickly before sharing otherwise you end up with group think.
-
Provide Opportunities for Learning and Growth Continuous Learning: Training and Development: Offer training sessions, workshops, and courses on creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. Exposure to New Ideas: Encourage team members to attend industry conferences, seminars, and webinars to gain exposure to new trends and ideas. Mentorship and Coaching: Internal Mentorship: Pair team members with mentors who can guide and inspire them to think creatively and innovate. External Inspiration: Bring in guest speakers or industry experts to share their experiences and insights on innovation.
-
Don't just focus on skill development, encourage exploration of diverse fields and perspectives. This cross-pollination of ideas can lead to unexpected breakthroughs and ignite fresh approaches to problem-solving.

Fostering the right environment, characterized by psychological safety, diversity, exploration, and recognition, is crucial for reigniting your team's passion for innovation when they lack motivation for creativity, as it creates the conditions for them to thrive and unlock their full innovative potential. • Create a safe environment for risk-taking and experimentation. • Empower Employees and Encourage Autonomy: Provide more autonomy and decision-making power. • Offer training, mentorship, and professional development. • Celebrate team's successes regularly. • Encourage Collaboration and Idea-Sharing: Facilitate brainstorming sessions and knowledge-sharing activities. • Model desired team behavior and share experiences.
-
Encourage a Creative Work Environment Flexible Workspaces: Creative Spaces: Designate areas in the workplace where team members can brainstorm and collaborate creatively, such as innovation labs or quiet thinking rooms. Flexible Hours: Offer flexible working hours to allow team members to work during their most creative times. Inspiring Atmosphere: Creative Stimuli: Incorporate elements that inspire creativity, such as art, plants, or thought-provoking quotes and posters. Play and Relaxation: Include areas for relaxation and play, as these can often stimulate creative thinking.
-
Facilitated brainstorming sessions where "All ideas are good" is a great place to start. Making it safe and fun for your team to share a wide range of creative ideas will get things flowing. Throwing in some healthy debate and consensus-building will build trust and teamwork. Walking away with clear next steps, assigned responsibilities, and awards for small wins along the way will keep the momentum.
-
Encourage Curiosity-driven Questions: Foster a culture where asking questions is not only encouraged but also celebrated. Encourage employees to ask open-ended, thought-provoking questions that challenge existing assumptions and spark innovative thinking. Lead by Example: As a leader, demonstrate your own curiosity and passion for learning. Share your own experiences of exploring new ideas and taking risks. Being a role model for curiosity and innovation will inspire and motivate your team to do the same.

Hey, I've been there! Creativity slumps happen. Here's what works for me: Mix things up. New environment, new ideas. Try a brainstorm session in a park. Challenge them. Set a wild goal. It's amazing what people come up with when pushed. Celebrate small wins. Did someone suggest a cool tweak? Make a big deal of it. Share the 'why'. Remind them of our mission. It's not just work, it's impact. Passion's contagious. Show your excitement, and they'll catch it too.
-
Lead by Example Demonstrate Creativity: Innovative Leadership: Show your own commitment to innovation by actively participating in brainstorming sessions and sharing your creative ideas. Open Mindset: Display an open mindset and be willing to consider and explore new ideas and approaches. Empower Your Team: Autonomy: Give your team the autonomy to explore and develop their ideas. Trust them to take ownership of innovation projects. Supportive Leadership: Be supportive and provide the necessary guidance and resources to help bring innovative ideas to fruition.
-
Creativity is motivation by emotion. Whether it is excitement, passion, fear or something else driving it, our emotions move the wheels that make us more creative. This is why that popular story about knowing the “why” gets repeated. What inspires someone is where they can dig to draw on creativity. Some people need metaphors and analogies to get them thinking a bit. Everyone is different and moving the creative needle is always linked to whatever gets their emotions moving. Even if it’s just what they perceive as fun such as solving a problem. Then show them and encourage them to exploit that strength.
