To inspire your team during unexpected market shifts, start by embracing the change. Acknowledge the reality without panic and demonstrate that change is an opportunity for growth and innovation. Stay calm and collected to provide a sense of stability. Encourage open communication, allowing team members to voice their concerns and ideas. This helps understand the collective sentiment and fosters a collaborative environment where everyone feels involved in navigating the shift. Show confidence in your team’s ability to adapt and succeed, reinforcing a positive mindset and a proactive approach to the new challenges and opportunities that arise.

I help leaders maximize talent.
From the onset, the team is watching you. Stay calm, open and truthful. In a conversation with your team, identify the specific skills, behaviors and communication modes that served your team in the past, especially through challenging times. Naming those valuable elements can elevate confidence in their ability to handle the change and lower anxiety when there is no immediate solution. Ask breakthrough-thinking questions to help form the way forward. For example: + How can we...."x"? + What new approach does this situation create for us? + What great idea is right in front of us? + How do we use our untapped strengths now? + How do we get a small win today? Job #1 for you as the leader: don't let the team doubt their limits.

I remember a line from a training course probably 35 years ago - "change is inevitable. You can be its victim or its architect." A market shift - even one that is apparently detrimental to your product is an opportunity. It provides an impetus to reshape your current offering, bring out something entirely new or minimize losses in an exit. The key is to recognize that there is change occurring and to begin to determine how to respond. So often the initial response is defensive, when offense is needed. Think of change as a wave coming in. A defensive strategy - stopping the wave - will be pointless. Instead, grab your board and ride the wave in before it passes you by (or grinds you into the bottom).

Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, handled the company's pivot to electric vehicles. Faced with the industry's shift towards sustainability, Barra embraced the change rather than resisting it. She acknowledged the reality of the market shift and communicated it as an opportunity for growth and innovation. By staying calm and collected, Barra provided stability and encouraged open communication, allowing team members to voice their concerns and ideas. This approach helped foster a collaborative environment where everyone felt involved in navigating the shift. Similarly, embrace change, stay calm, and encourage open communication to understand the collective sentiment and foster collaboration.

Having clarity on what has to change and what remains the same when market condition changes is very critical to the organization. Businesses will have to be adaptive and agile in terms of business strategy when market condition changes but company value and purposes generally do not change. The underlining business principles do not change. The more leader can clearly articulate what changes and what remains, the less uncertainties the organizations have to deal with and the more likely team would be able to embrace the changes.

You need to make sure that you communicate how the market has changed, but also focus on explaining to your team how that's going to affect them, how that's gonna affect the deliverables for the team, and how it might affect the day-to-day lives. In my experience, it's the uncertainty of how the changes actually will affect people that creates the most fear, the most resistance. So take the time to clearly communicate how the change is going to impact.

The key to communication in the corporate world is to share as openly as possible. What I mean is that we need to be communicating with others at the same level that we need to be communicated with. When we approach communication from that level, everything becomes easier.

The only consistent thing in life is change. So when the market changes, you will have to adapt your goals, your strategy and your go to market plan. In my experience, the secret here is to quickly adapt to the new realities and make sure that you understand what are the things that you can still continue to do and what are the things or processes or activities that you have to change. Some things will need small changes, some bigger changes. Make sure you quickly understand the difference.

Since change is a constant, our goals must adjust with the pace of change as well. Maybe this goal adjustment needs to be the creation of a new goal. Maybe things just got tougher for us and the economy tanked and we need to set our sites on something more in line with our true capacity.

Success in a rapidly changing market requires strategic agility. Sometimes, it's necessary to take a step back, refocus your efforts, and then take two steps forward to maximize opportunities and stay ahead of the curve. By embracing this adaptability, you'll thrive in a market that demands innovation and resilience. #adaptability #marketshifts #resilience

Nelson Mandela fostered resilience during his leadership in South Africa. Faced with immense adversity, Mandela created an environment where learning from mistakes and growing stronger was encouraged. He consistently shared stories of past successes achieved through struggle and perseverance, reminding his followers of their capability to overcome obstacles. By encouraging a growth mindset and focusing on what could be controlled, Mandela built a resilient movement that withstood significant challenges. Similarly, create an environment where it's okay to fail and learn from mistakes, encourage a growth mindset, and share stories of overcoming adversity. This will help your team cope with current shifts and prepare for future challenges.

Resilience is critical in the fast-paced world we live in. We are going to get smacked in the proverbial face and we need to be able to pick it back up and keep going. Resilience requires vision and a strong why - with those two things, we can overcome anything.

Offering support is crucial for team success. It builds trust, enhances morale, and fosters collaboration. Supportive environments encourage growth, innovation, and problem-solving. Providing assistance and resources helps achieve goals and boosts overall performance. A culture of support strengthens relationships and drives organizational success

I heard a great analogy for this that I absolutely love: In times of change, you’re either climbing or dancing. Your job is to figure out which and act accordingly. If you’re climbing, you clearly know where you want to go with your business, product or offering in the mid-term and your task is to help your team get there. You should: → Set clear milestones, communicate them very clearly and ensure your team has skills and tools If you’re dancing, you need your team to get somewhere together - that somewhere isn’t clear to you, yet. You should: → Over-communicate your 'Why' - this becomes the driving clarity during times of uncertainty or change Whether climbing or dancing, the key is to move deliberately and thoughtfully.
