'Hills Fire' briefly forces evacuations in parts of Riverside County

A brush fire forced temporary evacuations in part of Riverside County before expiring late Friday night.

Cal Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department responded to a call of a vegetation fire near the intersection of Juniper Flats Road and Mapes Road in Homeland, California just after 2 p.m. Homeland is a census-designated place about eight and a half miles southeast of Perris.

While officials originally estimated the fire to have burned about 100 acres, they later corrected that to about 71 acres. The fire was fully contained by Sunday evening.

Officials issued evacuation orders near the area of the fire just before 5 p.m. but have since given residents the option to go back.
