Our heat wave continues for the foreseeable future and it is important we keep our pets in mind. Every dog loves a good walk, but with temperatures this extreme, it can end up being dangerous for our four legged friends. When air temperatures reach into the middle 90s, concrete temperatures can soar to higher than 120 degrees and blacktop can climb above 140 degrees. These temperatures can damage the paw pads of dogs if they are exposed for a prolonged period of time. The first signs of damage can occur as quickly as 1 minute after paws hit the pavement.

Some dogs are more well-equipped to handle these hot temps. Dogs that are typically outside more often and those with fur that natural grows on the bottom of the paws are at less of a risk. That doesn't mean their risk is zero. A few good tips to beat the heat are to take walks in the morning or evening, avoiding the hottest part of the day. If possible, find grassy areas and avoid pavement. Watch for discomfort your dog could be feeling and if you have the means, purchasing summer dog boots can eliminate the problem all together.
