Update: Officials have said what could have caused a fatal plane crash in North Carolina.

AirStar Aviation said the following in a press release:

"Despite the overall unfavorable weather conditions in the area, reports indicated clear conditions at the time of takeoff. It is believed that the aircraft went down due to poor weather conditions at approximately 8:57 p.m. in McDowell County, NC."

Three people have died after a plane that took off from Johnson County crashed in North Carolina, officials said Monday.

McDowell County Emergency Management said the plane was found in the Brackett Town Road area, off Vein Mountain Road, near the McDowell/Rutherford County line, according to our sister station WLOS.

"Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those affected by this devastating incident," emergency officials said in a statement.

Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said a single-engine Cessna 182 crashed in the mountains with three people on board, according to preliminary information. The FAA says the NTSB will be in charge of the investigation.

The NTSB stated the crash occurred on Sunday. The wreckage was discovered Monday.
