CBS Drama 'All Rise' Will Use FaceTime and Zoom to Film New Episode Amid Social Distancing

Many television shows and movies have paused filming at the current time as people practice social distancing, which has delayed new movies and television content. One CBS drama series, "All Rise," has a unique solution, though, and plans to film in actors' homes.

"All Rise" will use programs like FaceTime, WebEX, and Zoom, along with "other available social media and online technology," according to TVLine. The episode, which will focus on current events, will feature footage recorded by each of the series regulars within their homes, with the judge virtually presiding over a bench trial in an episode that mirrors current events.

"It's a unique chance for our All Rise family to band together - in our different homes, even cities - to tell a story about resilience, justice and the power of community," executive producer Greg Spottiswood said in a statement.

Virtual footage will be shot in each of the series regular's homes, with VFX added in post production to create the necessary backgrounds. A cinematographer operating solo from a vehicle will capture exterior footage representing "the desolate environment that currently exists on the streets and in the neighborhoods of Los Angeles."

The episode is set to air on Monday, May 4, and if it goes well, we could see other TV studios adopting similar techniques using software and hardware from Apple and other technology companies to create content remotely.

It's by far the easiest to use, and has shown to be highly reliable. When you're IT, and have to support people who will inevitably have countless other issues during this pandemic, that can make a big difference, which is why everyone in IT I know has been recommending it (including myself). The other concerns people have been having about Zoom will be immaterial so long as people have (quite frankly) far bigger problems.

I've been seeing this myself in the I.T. realm, yet not on a scale this large (and prior to WTO announcement 3.12). That said how does it scale for those with poor internet connectivity? Hmm; some digging I have to do.

I first got introduced to it just a short while before the coronavirus really kicked off. I was in talks with a local library to potentially work on some software for them, and we used Zoom to talk to a person from another department in one of our meetings. The IT manager in the room said it was the best solution out there for these sorts of things when he set up the call for us all to talk.

Since then I've used it a lot for university work myself, and it is indeed extremely good. Far better than Skype, Teams, FaceTime, etc. Quality is always stellar, no dropped audio or anything like I often see on Messenger's audio calls and such. It just works really.

The installer practices MacRumors reported on earlier were shady and such, but frankly, it just working when you really need to have a university lecture going with hundreds of students following along is more important. It's frankly amazing how well it works. And it's got great functionality as well for these things, like waiting rooms, recording options and all sorts.

I suspect CBS's claims are a bit exaggerated, and only a portion of the show will be filmed through real-time video chat platforms.

I've found it works fairly well even with people with poor internet connectivity. However, even if their connectivity isn't sufficient, they have alternatives such as a voice-only phone call into the meeting, which I've seen being used extensively as well, based on my company's Zoom account logs.

Considering FaceTime works only within Apple's ecosystem, I doubt Apple's marketing department cares all that much about Zoom's rise.

Having said that, I wish Apple would make it easier for follow a contact. "Share Name and Photo" option should extend to Apple ID, so that I can easily add FaceTime or iMessage later without having to add them to Contacts.

Someone has to give it a try, why not do this? Makes a lot of sense! Some people who haven't even watched a single episode will tune in to see how good/bad it is. Either way its a win for them, new content for viewers as well. What isn't to like here?

Modern Family did an episode using FaceTime called "Connection Lost", which is among the highest rated episode. At the time, it was criticized by some as a product placement and/or gimmicky.
