Apple today added refurbished M2 Mac mini models to its online store in the United States, offering the latest 2023 version of the desktop machine at a discounted price for the first time.

Refurbished M2 Mac mini models are priced starting at $509 for the version with an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 8GB RAM, and 256GB SSD. That's a $90 discount off of the original $599 price tag for that machine.

Apple is selling a range of Mac mini models with various RAM, Ethernet, and SSD upgrades, but all of the available models have the M2 chip, with no M2 Pro options for sale at this time. The lower prices come in at around 15 percent off, with the biggest discounts available on pricier machines.

The M2 Mac mini models came out in January 2023, replacing the prior M1 and Intel Mac mini options. There have been no external updates to the Mac mini, with Apple instead focusing on internal upgrades that include the M2 chip.

Refurbished products from Apple are almost identical to new devices, with each one undergoing a refurbishment process that includes full functionality testing, blemish-free external enclosures, and more. Refurbished products are eligible for AppleCare+ and have the same 14-day return period as new Apple devices.

So more than what you'd get with a student/education discount and more than what may other retailers (Amazon, B&H Photo) are selling them for. No deal.

While refurbs can be a nice way to get a warrantied Mac, direct from Apple, for less than retail, I do want to say we've seen better deals at Amazon (and/or other retailers). No matter how you slice it, M2 Mac mini is a solid little nugget.

As a matter of fact, my 12 yo calls his Mac mini 16/512 Power Nugget. He is loving it, for what he uses it for most; Steam, YouTube and 3D printing. While I haven't spent a lot of time with it, I have been pretty impressed with what I've seen. Performance is pretty incredible. Working in multiple, fullscreen spaces, he's doing things like playing a heavily mod'd KSP, via Steam, full-tilt, whilst streaming YouTube and the the M2 almost feels bored. The form factor, something I didn't think much about at purchase, is pretty cool. Super clean and quiet. His 24" monitor sits nicely atop that little 7.5" x 7.5 x 1.4" block. And the price point - even for an upgraded 16/512 - worked.

Now if they could reduce the footprint to be a, erm, mini Mini, then I'd consider it for the headless Traktor Pro rig I've always wanted.

There’s no customization. They’re saying the base model at $509 refurb… they sell that model for $499 on amazon brand new.
Discounts across the board, but of course you know that. In direct answer though, I'd rather buy from apple than amazon, less messy if things go wrong (& it's cheaper refurb than retail in the UK)

Best Buy is selling M1 MacBook Airs for $799. It has me wondering if those are going to be discontinued by WWDC. Could that mean that the M2 Airs could drop to $999? Let’s hope….
