Our product tester first did a session at 46° F for several minutes, then tried a two-minute session at 33° F. They noted that quite a bit of ice formed in the tub at 33° F, and that while it was incredibly cold and challenging to endure, they really enjoyed it and were looking forward to using it again.
Weighing 345 pounds when empty, the Sun Home Cold Plunge Pro is the heaviest cold plunge tub our team has tested. The chiller weighs another 80 pounds. The tub is delivered curbside outside your home, so we recommend having the means to move it or hiring someone to do so. It took four men on our team to lift the tub off the shipping pallet. But the Cold Plunge Pro does come shipped in one piece and with built-in caster wheels, making it easier to move into place from there. Our product tester did note that you’ll likely need another person to help you roll it.

Sun Home Saunas says you’ll need to replace the water and sanitize the tank once a month and clean the filter every two weeks, with residential use.
According to Sun Home Saunas, the Cold Plunge Pro operates at “minimal decibel levels,” for a quieter cold plunge experience.
This cold plunge tub is also pretty roomy, measuring 6.5 feet long. There are two vents that need 15-27 inches of clearance for proper ventilation, so given that and the tub’s size, you’ll need adequate space for it. Our tester noted that it measures 47 inches long internally, with plenty of room to stretch your legs out. They said it’s a great cold plunge tub for people of all heights, and that it’s also easy to get in and out of; though another product tester preferred using a small step stool to help them get in and out.
As one of the most luxurious cold plunge models on the market, Sun Home’s Cold Plunge Pro has a sleek and appealing design, with colorful interior and exterior LED lighting. The tub’s control panel is easy to use, according to our product tester. There’s also a padded headrest for comfort. However, the tub does not come with an app or Wi-Fi to allow you to control it from a distance, and it does not come with any accessories like some high-end cold plunge tubs.

Sun Home Saunas claims this tub can hold individuals up to 6 feet 8 inches. Our product testers find this to be true. They range in height from 5 feet 4 inches to 6 feet, and each fit in the tub with room to spare. They even noted that two shorter individuals should be able to sit in it comfortably. We rated it 5 out of 5 stars for ergonomics.
The Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge cools water to as low as 37.5° F. But unlike most other cold plunges, the Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge can also warm water up to 104° F. If you want the flexibility to take hot or cold baths whenever you please, it could be a solid choice.

However, our team product testers didn’t find it as durable as the inflatable tub from Sun Home Saunas, the Cold Plunge. The material didn’t feel as sturdy, and our lead reviewer didn’t feel like she could sit on the edge without the walls collapsing. She scored this tub three out of five stars for durability.
Our product tester also didn’t like that you can’t leave water in it for long. According to Redwood Outdoors, leaving the tub filled for more than 48 hours will cause it to bulge, “which is a waste of resources—with a 120 gallons of water capacity—if you have to fill and drain it every couple days to improve longevity of the product,” adds Mohr.

Unlike the more advanced cold plunges we reviewed, the Ice Barrel 400 requires you to add water and ice or frozen water bottles manually. The Rubbermaid Stock Tank doesn’t come with filters. One of our product reviewers throws Epsom salts in her stock tank with the hope of keeping the water sanitary and improving muscle recovery. This DIY cold plunge is made from weather-resistant structural foam. Our product tester said that the tank seemed very durable and didn’t change shape when filled with water. How do cold plunge tubs work?

They may have thermostats and cooling systems that allow them to achieve a precise temperature. They may even connect to apps so you can control the settings from your phone.
Other, simpler tubs require you to add cold water and ice manually. These tubs require more upkeep since you have to change the water every couple of days, but they are often much cheaper.
Are cold plunges safe?
Cold plunges are generally safe for most people, assuming you’re abiding by appropriate water temperature and plunge duration. If you are not used to taking cold plunges, it’s generally recommended to start off at a warmer temperature such as 60° F and for a short duration of 30-60 seconds. Over time, you can adjust the water temperature lower and stay submerged for longer.
Regardless of how acclimated you become, extended periods of cold water submersion can be unsafe. You may want to limit your time in a cold plunge to just a few minutes, or even less in super cold water. According to the NOAA, hypothermia becomes a risk in water that’s 60° F or colder. In water that’s 32-40° F, loss of dexterity can occur in less than three minutes and more serious hyperthermia symptoms like loss of consciousness can set in in as little as 15 minutes. ( 7 )

- Cold Life Plunge: This vertical cold plunge tub is durable and a good option for tall people, costing $4,245. However, it doesn’t come with a chiller—that costs an extra $2,745. While our product tester enjoyed using it and thought it had a nice design, they said they preferred the Nordic Wave Viking and pointed out the Cold Life Plunge has a shorter one-year limited warranty.
- Tru Grit Inflatable Ice Bath: This inflatable cold plunge option costs $900. Our product testers thought it was quite durable and sturdy for an inflatable cold plunge tub. However, they noted this model was more difficult to drain than other options, and roughly four inches of water was still left after draining it, making it harder to properly clean.
- The Cold Pod: Another inflatable cold plunge tub, this option costs $130. Our product tester said that while it’s affordable, easy to set up, and got the job done, they found it to be flimsy, hard to get in and out of because it doesn’t hold its shape well, and not well-suited for tall people.
- Renu Therapy Cold Stoic 2.0: This high-end cold plunge tub costs $9,700 and offers great performance with a spa-like aesthetic. It’s perhaps the cleanest cold plunge we’ve tested, with its advanced filtration system. However, our product testers noted that it can take up to an hour to adjust the temperature by one degree. Plus, it isn’t convenient to change the temperature as you have to unscrew a protective cover to access the buttons. But it effectively keeps the water very cold.

According to experts, the ideal temperature for a cold plunge tub is between 50° and 59° F. ( 8 ) Though anecdotally, much of the discussion is keeping the water just above freezing, even though that may not be warranted. Some people can tolerate water temperatures in the upper 30s. If you’re new to cold water therapy, you may need to start above 60° F. Decrease it by a few degrees every week or two until you can handle colder water.
How large should a cold plunge tub be?
A cold plunge tub should be large enough to fit your entire body. Ideally, you’ll be able to stretch your legs out fully when lying down if you opt for a horizontal tub. If you choose a vertical tub, you should be able to go underwater at least up to your shoulders when your knees are bent.
How long should you stay in a cold plunge tub?
Studies around sprint performance and cold plunging suggest that two to five minutes is enough to reap the benefits of a cold plunge ( 9 ). Just like there’s no best time of day to work out , there’s no best time to cold plunge. It’s a personal preference.
