A major C-suite move at Meta always draws attention, but the tech giant’s naming of a new CFO in July 2022 turned more heads than usual. Taking on the job that reports to CEO Mark Zuckerberg and oversees 10,000 workers was then 36-year-old Susan Li, Facebook’s former VP of finance who has been with the social media company since its finance team had just a handful of employees in 2008. With her inaugural year as CFO almost under her belt, Li now joins the Fortune MPW list for the first time. The Stanford alum has steered Meta’s finances—$116.61 billion in 2022 revenue—as it has recovered from a rocky 2022 that included its first-ever year-over-year revenue decline. Meta’s “year of efficiency” and staggered layoffs of more than 20,000 workers were part of a strategy to put the business back on solid financial footing. Combined with increased investment in AI, Meta’s stock is now up 150% so far in 2023, with Li playing a key role.
